Alpharma : Ag Students Invited To Tell Story Of Animal Agriculture - Deadline : the middle of December 2008

Recent food recalls and quality concerns have driven consumers to become more interested in the on-farm management practices used to produce food. This is especially true in animal agriculture, where perceived consumer preferences threaten the use of modern management technologies. Alpharma Inc., Animal Health is embarking on an exciting program that will begin to educate consumers about how their food is produced, enlisting the help of college agriculture students along the way.

Research conducted by Alpharma in partnership with GfK Roper indicated that consumers came to support the use of antibiotics in food animal production once educated about their use to prevent or treat disease. This indicates that opportunities are available to help consumers understand the importance of antibiotics—and other on-farm technology—to support animal welfare, food safety and agricultural sustainability.

“We know that, in order to feed a growing world population, certain technologies will need to be at the disposal of American farmers in order to support modern agricultural practices,” says Jeff Mellinger, Global Leader, Sales & Marketing for Alpharma, Inc., Animal Health. “As consumers continue to have a greater impact on retailer’s decisions, and as those decisions trickle down to impact how animals are raised on the farm, we need to make sure that consumers are aware of the importance of some of the technologies—including the use of antibiotics—to ensure healthy animals and a safe, abundant food supply.”

In an innovative step toward consumer education, agriculture students from the East Coast to California are invited to participate in a three-phase contest, the first of which is an open call for farm-related video clips. A variety of clip suggestions are listed on the contest Web site, www.meetwhatyoueat.com, ranging from cows being milked to combines harvesting crops in the heartland. Students can submit their choice of any number of video segments, whether recorded on a digital camera or high-power video recorder.

As the contest sponsor, Alpharma will award participants a $25 gift card for each usable clip submitted, up to 10 per person. These video segments will be available online for the next phase of the contest where participants will be able to compile their own video using segments chosen from the site. This will provide students with an opportunity to create their own version of the story of food production.

Completed videos will then be posted on the contest Web site, allowing those who view them to vote for their favorite in support of the friends, club or school who produced them. The contest culminates with the top video producers winning a $5,000 cash prize, courtesy of Alpharma.

“This is an exciting opportunity for students involved with and passionate about agriculture to educate consumers in an innovative way,” says Mellinger. “We look forward to seeing what students can come up with, and we enjoy supporting the student’s creativity and expression.”

The contest began September 8th and will run through the middle of December, with the winning video announced December 22, 2008.

Alpharma Inc., Animal Health is a leading manufacturer and marketer of animal health feed additives to the cattle, poultry and swine industries worldwide. Alpharma is committed to providing feed products that foster health and welfare in livestock animals.

INCHES International Film Competition - Deadline : 1 March, 2009

As part of the 10th anniversary celebrations starting on 15 September 2008, the International Network on Children’s Health, Environment and Safety (INCHES), one of HEAL’s member organisations, launched an International Film Competition on Health and Environment, the first in its kind.

INCHES is a network of people and organisations working to create a healthier environment for children. Their competition, called "Focus on Children in a Healthy Environment" centres on the themes "Climate" and "Environmental Health" and will run until 1 March, 2009. Several cash prizes of 2500 euros will be awarded to the winners of both categories. There are also separate cash prizes for films up to 5 minutes of duration and up to 15 minutes.

The competition is open to all nationalities and ages and both amateurs and professionals are encouraged to participate.

Peter van den Hazel, INCHES’ chair of the board, hopes the films will enable his organisation to reach out to more young people and increase public awareness of environmental health issues globally. He also hopes that they will help to stimulate the political and social changes needed to save children from hazardous environmental situations, such as poor water quality and sanitation, air pollution, waste and poverty reduction.

Business Contests For SMBs Mean Chances For Free Stuff! - Deadline : 14 October 2008

The semiannual cycle of contests for small and midsize businesses is once again in full swing and businesses with the time and wherewithal to develop a worthy entry have a legitimate shot at scoring some attractive swag from BlackBerry Curves to IT infrastructure makeovers to $100,000.

The makeover concept is a popular for businesses contests (Microsoft does one every year) and the fall season is no exception. The recently concluded CDW Project Upgrade Technology Makeover Contest -- for companies with 50 or fewer employees -- bestowed $50,000 in IT upgrades on the Spring Hill Music Group, the Little Mittens Child Care Center, and Cain Hibbard Myers & Cook.

But if you missed that entry deadline, not to fear, there's another makeover contest only a click away. HP's "Pimp My Infrastructure" contest, billed as an IT Midmarket Makeover Contest is dangling a $16,000 small business and $36,000 midsize business makeover before eager applicants. If you dream of servers with Quad-Core Opteron processors, HP Compaq Notebooks, or HP printers, get your entry in by October 20.

If you happen to be of the Canadian persuasion (specifically Ontario or Quebec) and can conjure up 250 scintillating words to describe why your business needs a makeover, you can put your name in the hat for a $33,000 business makeover from Bell Canada, featuring the BlackBerry Curve and a host of telecom services. Deadline on this one is October 14.

Now makeovers are one thing, but intellectual property is another. And at least in contest economics, worth quite a bit more. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is luring start-ups and entrepreneurs with the $100,000 grand prize in the 2008 AWS Start-Up Challenge. So-called "great" ideas or applications already built on Amazon Web services are eligible. Entries must be submitted by October 3 -- and even if you don't take the big money, if you submit a legit idea, you'll come away with a $25 AWS credit for your trouble.

And then there's the truly big game in the contest competition: Google's $10 million competition for an idea that will change the world. If you've got a concept as revolutionary as the Hippo Water Roller send it in by October 20 and take your shot.

ANNAPOLIS - The Maryland Department of Natural Resources reminds photographers that just two weeks remains to enter in the 5th Annual Maryland Natural Resource Photo Contest. Sponsors Ritz Camera Centers, Boater’s World Marine Centers, Maryland Public Television and DNR, encourage student, amateur and professional photographers to submit their photos of Maryland’s diverse natural resources by September 5, 2008

“Our annual photo contest offers photographers of all skill levels the opportunity to share their appreciation of our state’s exceptional natural resources, and the people who enjoy them,” said DNR Secretary John Griffin. ”Each year the exciting images we receive celebrate the breadth and diversity of our exceptional landscapes, waterways and the people who enjoy them.”

Last year, Chuck Prahl of Cambridge topped nearly 400 other photographers with his winning image entitled “Working the Trotline,” a photograph of a fishing boat on the Choptank River in Cambridge. Second place went to Sid Keiser of Cockeysville, for his tranquil shot of the boat Miss Jennifer, “Water Color.” Third place went to Karen Messick of Baltimore, for her close-up, “Spiderwort,” of the native flower.

Photographers of all ages can win up to $1,200 in prizes and a chance to have their outdoor images published in print and online. Winning entries will be featured in the winter issue of The Maryland Natural Resource magazine as well as the 2009 DNR calendar.

Photos entered into the 2008 contest will be judged within 5 categories: birds, including waterfowl; mammals, reptiles and amphibians; invertebrates; landscape scenes; plants; and outdoor recreation illustrating people in nature.

To qualify, photographs must be taken in Maryland. Photographers may submit up to three entries for a $10 entry fee. Photos cannot be more than two years old or previously published. Non-residents may participate as long as the photos were taken in Maryland. Winners will be announced online October 16.
