Architecture Naturally is open to students over the age of 16 studying photography or architecture, or related design courses. The focus for this year's competition is on the important relationship between architecture, and the natural world.

Atlantic Challenge International Contest of Seamanship 2010

'Vitalite under sail - Atlantic Challenge International Contest of Seamanship' Scott Wagg

During the summer of 2010, Midland Bay will be home to international crews of youth participating in a friendly contest of seamanship from July 24 to 31st. The crews from countries such as France, Italy, Belgium, Indonesia, Russia, Ireland, Denmark and others will participate in sailing, rowing and other events using replica 18th century 38' wooden longboats on Georgian Bay.

The Atlantic Challenge International Contest of Seamanship is a biannual event that brings member countries together for a week long gathering where mixed crews of youth participate in a variety of events. The event aims to encourage traditional maritime skills and to foster friendship and harmony between youth, nations and cultures. The crews, made up of youth ages 15 and up learn to manoeuvre these replica boats under sail and oars through a series of events.

These events include a traditional sailing race, sailing and rowing combined, rowing, rudderless slalom, jackstay transfer, man overboard, Captain's gig and navigation. Each event requires the crew of 13 to work together as a team to complete each event in the least amount of time, or with the most finesse such as the Captain's gig. The Captain's gig event provides an opportunity for the crews to show off their expertise in controlling the 38' boat as they dock, pick up a dignitary and transport them to a waiting ship. Other events, strive to mix crews from around the world to provide an opportunity for crews to get to know each other and develop international relationships.

Atlantic Challenge was first begun in 1984 and since then has grown to 12 nations and over 70 longboats throughout the world. Canada participated in events since 1992 and last hosted the event in 1994 in Penetanguishene. Next year, several crews will be coming early to train in the area so expect to see these majestic boats sailing in the Midland area for most of July.

Essay Competition 2010 to Honour John Polkinghorne's 80th Birthday

In 2010 the International Society for Science and Religion will be celebrating the 80th birthday of its founding President, John Polkinghorne.

In association with the Ian Ramsey Centre in Oxford, it is organizing a conference on “God and Physics” as part of this celebration, to be held at St. Anne’s College, Oxford, UK, from 7th to 11th July 2010. (For more details click click here.) ISSR will also be publishing a festschrift on Polkinghorne’s work, based in part on invited papers to be given at this conference.

In addition to these two activities, and with funding from the John Templeton Foundation, the Society now offers three substantial prizes to students or younger academics (not yet in a tenured post) for an essay, of no more than 10,000 words, on an aspect of Polkinghorne’s work:

1st: prize £10,000
2nd: prize £5,000
3rd: prize £2,000

ISSR encourages applicants from a range of disciplines, not merely those already well-integrated into the ‘science and religion’ discourse.

The essay should be concerned with a major theme in John Polkinghorne’s work on the interface between theology and science, focusing on one of the following:
a) divine action
b) chaos theory
c) eschatology
d) natural theology
e) information
f) epistemology
f) any other major theme in Polkinghorne’s work on the science-religion dialogue.

The essay should contain at least one of the following:

a) an exploration of what is unique in the work of Polkinghorne
b) an analysis of the way in which his work relates to that of other scholars
c) an exploration of how his work relates to recent trends in the science-religion dialogue that are not part of his own work (e.g. evolutionary psychology.)

The essay should show a good grasp of the relevant component of John Polkinghorne’s work and also aim to advance the reader’s understanding and appraisal of that work. The winner of the first prize will be given an opportunity to present the winning essay at the conference described above and may - if the essay is of sufficient quality and relevance - be invited to include it in the festchrift.

The competition will be judged by three leading experts in the science and religion field. The essays will be judged on:

1. Clarity and lucidity of engagement with Polkinghorne’s work.
2. Quality of argument (originality, clarity, etc.)

Each essay and a curriculum vitae of its author must be received by Dr.Christopher Knight, the ISSR Executive Secretary, by 31st March 2010. These may be sent by post to him at:

ISSR Office,
Bene’t House,
St.Edmund’s College,
Cambridge CB3 0BN,
United Kingdom.
or else (preferably) sent as attachments to an email message to him (email: cck26@cam.ac.uk). (An email message to him indicating the intention to enter the competition would be very helpful to the organizers.)

NAACL-HLT 2010 Workshop on Active Learning for Natural Language Processing

==============================================================
First Call for Paper Submissions

NAACL-HLT 2010 Workshop on
Active Learning for Natural Language Processing (ALNLP)

June 5 or 6, 2010, Los Angeles, CA

http://www.active-learning.net/alnlp2010

Submission Deadline: March 1, 2010
==============================================================

Labeled training data is required to achieve state-of-the-art performance for many machine learning solutions to NLP tasks. While traditional supervised methods rely exclusively on existing labeled data to induce a model, active learning allows the learner to select unlabeled data for labeling in an effort to reduce annotation costs without sacrificing performance. Thus, active learning appears promising for NLP applications where unlabeled data is readily available (e.g., web pages, audio recordings, minority language data), but obtaining labels is cost-prohibitive.

Ample recent work has demonstrated the effectiveness of active learning over a diverse range of applications. Despite these findings, active learning has not yet been widely adopted for many ongoing large-scale corpora annotation efforts -- resulting in a dearth of real-world case studies and copious research questions. Machine learning literature has primarily focused on active learning in the context of classification, devoting less attention to issues specific to NLP including annotation user studies, incorporation of semantic information, and more complex prediction tasks (e.g. parsing, machine translation).

TOPICS

The aim of this workshop is to foster innovation and discussion that advances our understanding in these and other practical issues for active learning in NLP.

Topics of particular interest include:

-- Alternative query types : labeling features rather than instances, mixed-resolution queries for structured instances, etc.
-- Creative ways for obtaining data via active learning (e.g., online games, Mechanical Turk)
-- Managing multiple, possibly non-expert annotators (e.g., "crowdsourcing" environments)
-- Reusability : using data acquired with one active learner to train other model classes
-- Domain adaptation and active learning
-- Multi‐task active learning
-- Criteria for stopping and monitoring active learning progress
-- Active learning in coordination with semi-supervised or unsupervised learning approaches
-- Interactive active learning interfaces and other HCI issues
-- Parallelization of active learning and its computational challenges
-- Software engineering considerations for active learning and NLP
-- Theoretical analysis of active learning

We also welcome case-study papers describing the application of active learning in real-world annotation projects and lessons learned thereby.

Additionally, we would consider papers with insights applicable to NLP from other machine learning communities (e.g., computer vision, bioinformatics, and data mining), where annotation costs are also high.

SUBMISSIONS

We invite submissions of two kinds: 1. original and unpublished work as full papers, limited to 8 pages (+1 extra page for references); 2. position or work-in-progress papers, limited to 4 pages (including references). Both kinds of papers will appear in the proceedings and presented orally. As reviewing will be double-blind, author information should not be included in the papers and self-reference should be avoided.

All submissions must be made in PDF format using the START paper

submission website:
https://www.softconf.com/naaclhlt2010/alnlp/
Submissions must follow the NAACL HLT 2010 formatting requirements:
http://naaclhlt2010.isi.edu/authors.html
Authors are strongly encouraged to use the LaTeX or Microsoft Word style files available there. Papers not conforming to these requirements are subject to rejection without review.

Google Model Your Town Competition 2010

Deadline is 11:59 PM PST on March 1, 2010

What makes your town an incredible place to live?

Show your civic pride (and maybe win a prize) by creating a 3D portrait of your community and sharing it with the world. You have the power to get your town on the map – and there's no bigger map than Google Earth.

See what other towns have done (Google Earth file)

The Google Model Your Town Competition is open to people from all over the world.
All you have to do is build 3D models of the buildings in your community. Model whichever structures you think are necessary to show the planet what's special about your town.

Be recognized by your community for doing something great.

Having a 3D model of your town in Google Earth helps residents and visitors understand it in a way that flat maps and photographs can't. You can be a local hero by making a contribution to your town's future.

Getting started is easy.

You can enter on your own or recruit up to five of your fellow citizens to help you form a team, and the software tools you need are free.

Get started today

Follow us on Twitter.

Details, details

You can model as many structures as you like – which types of buildings you choose to include is entirely up to you. The important thing is that your choices say something about the character and history of your town.

Modeling teams may include up to six members.

Buildings can be modeled with SketchUp, a free and relatively easy-to-use 3D modeling program from Google. You use SketchUp in combination with Google Earth to give models a precise geographic location.
Buildings can also be modeled with Google Building Maker if your town is located in an area where Building Maker data is available. These models can also be edited and improved with Google SketchUp.
Each completed building model should be uploaded to a dedicated town collection on the Google 3D Warehouse.
Join our Google Competition Group to discuss ideas and issues with other modelers. It's also a great way to find people to help you form a team.
To enter, each team must complete and submit an online entry form.
The competition submission deadline is 11:59 PM PST on March 1, 2010.
For more information, please take a look at our list of Frequently Asked Questions and at the Getting Started page. You might also consult the official rules before you enter.

Judging

Entries will be judged on the basis of the following general criteria:

Accuracy: Your models' scale, location and orientation must be as true-to-life as possible.
Photo-texturing: "Paint" your models with photographs of the actual buildings. Use photo-editing software to create textures that are devoid of trees, cars, people and other visual clutter.
Efficiency: Make sure your town loads quickly in Google Earth by keeping your models simple.
Detail: Create a sense of place by emphasizing things that make your town unique.
Metadata: Include plenty of text information about the buildings you upload.
Coverage: While quality is more important than quantity, model as much as you can to provide a compelling 3D experience for online visitors.
Elegance: Strive for a combination of beautiful textures, lightweight models and rich metadata.
Take a look at our list of Acceptance Criteria to get a good idea of what you're shooting for.

Finalists will be picked by an internal team of SketchUp experts. From among those finalists, a winner will be decided by a public vote that will take place on this website. The winning town will be announced by May 15, 2010.

Prizes

The winning individual/team will receive:

USD$10,000 for the town's public school district (or international equivalent)
a visit from a Google team, along with an event in the winners' honor
a video profile of the winning team and their town, to be featured on YouTube
a virtual tour of the winning town that will be added to the Google Earth website
international publicity in the form of blog posts, tweets and other media
additional coverage on Google websites
