Exeter Writing Contest For Students (Deadline March 2011)

The Exeter Historical Society would like to invite students in grades 6 through 12 to compete for the Nancy Carnegie Merrill History Award by writing a research paper in honor of our esteemed former curator for her invaluable contributions to the preservation and interpretation of our local history.

Students at the Cooperative Middle School and Exeter High School are invited to enter by contacting faculty members in their social studies departments.

Students who do not attend one of the above-mentioned schools may enter by contacting the Exeter Historical Society for further information. Topics should focus on an aspect of our communal past related to the theme “Exeter at the Time of the Civil War.” Students should not attempt to write the research paper without receiving the judges’ criteria and requirements from their school’s faculty members or the staff of the Exeter Historical Society.

A panel of judges will choose one entry from each school division that best meets the criteria of outstanding achievement in format, historical accuracy, originality, and style.

Winning papers will be read by the authors at an awards ceremony on April 21, 2011.

A $100 prize will also be awarded to each winner.

Seacoast Credit Union of Hampton and Exeter is generously sponsoring the award for the fifth consecutive year.

The staff of the Exeter Historical Society welcomes interested students to visit and explore our collection for ideas and inspiration.

It is our hope that the Nancy Carnegie Merrill Award will foster an appreciation for our community and an interest in its past.

The award is named for Nancy Carnegie Merrill, esteemed citizen and Exeter town historian.

Mrs. Merrill, a graduate of The College of William & Mary in Virginia and Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, moved to Exeter, NH, from her native Ohio in 1949 to be the school nurse for SAU16.

Her nursing career ceased in 1952 when she married David D. Merrill.

After her husband’s death in 1975, she earned her Master of Library Science degree from the University of Rhode Island and served as the reference librarian at the Exeter Public Library.

Mrs. Merrill’s interest in local history, backed by her skill and patience as a researcher, has benefited readers of her many newspaper articles and of her important 1988 town history, Exeter, New Hampshire 1888-1988.

During her career as a local historian, Mrs. Merrill was the director of collections at the Exeter Historical Society for 25 years, as well as serving on the New Hampshire American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, as a trustee of the New Hampshire Historical Society and historian of The Congregational Church.

Mrs. Merrill retired from the society in 2000.

The submission deadline for research papers is Tuesday, March 22, 2011.
