Novel Competitions

I've updated the competition calendar quite extensively today, and thought I'd draw special attention to two competitions aimed at novel writers.

The first one, The McKitterick Prize, is run by the Society of Authors and is FREE to enter. with a whopping prize of £4000 for the winner. It's also aimed at authors over 40 years of age, so well done them! You can either send in a published novel (but it must be your first novel, and you can't have had any novels published before that - children's novels don't count), or if you haven't had a novel published, you can submit the first 30 pages (and yes, I did try this with my Raven novel last year but got nowhere). PDF entry form. You must have a completed novel ready to send them if they ask though. Closing date: 20th December 2008

The second novel competition is the Rose and Crown novel competition, for 'inspirational romance' novels. It costs £20 to enter. The first prize is £200 and the second prize is £100, plus a guaranteed publishing contract to both winners, and any others deemed suitable for publication. The novel must have a Christian outlook, "even if the Christian references are only slight, the tone should satisfy a Christian audience." If you're not sure what this means, their normal guidelines state:

Please avoid blasphemy, foul language, gratuitous sex/sensuality, violence,
racism, and hate speech - even if by a non-Christian character.

(I was surprised to find out that this is a British publisher as I was sure, for some reason, they'd be American). Closing date : 15th January 2009
