Environmental Stewardship Awards of Tennesseans 2010

The deadline for nominations is March 31, 2010

Nominations are sought for the 2010 Environmental Stewardship Awards of Tennesseans who go above and beyond to protect the state’s diverse environment.

“The continued health of our communities is tantamount to the quality and safety of our environment, affecting our lives from the air we breathe to the health of our state’s streams and rivers,” Gov. Phil Bredesen said in an emailed announcement.

“Recognizing those committed to protecting and preserving Tennessee is a worthwhile effort, not only to honor these individuals and organizations for their outstanding work but to encourage others to follow their example.”

The 13 categories for awards are: Agriculture/Forestry; Aquatic Resource Preservation; Building Green; Energy Leadership; Environmental Education and Outreach; Green Schools; Greenways and Trails; Hazardous Waste Reduction; Solid Waste Reduction; Lifetime Achievement; Natural Heritage Conservation; Parks and Recreation; and Pollution Prevention.

Any individual, business, organization, educational institution or agency is eligible, provided it is located in Tennessee and its projects were completed during 2009. Nominees must have a minimum of three years of environmental compliance with the Department of Environment and Conservation to be eligible for consideration.

Self-nominations are encouraged.

A panel of judges representing agricultural, conservation, forestry, environmental and academic professionals will select award recipients based on criteria including on-the-ground achievement, innovation and public education. The deadline for nominations is March 31, 2010. Award recipients will be announced in May 2010.

The purpose of the Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards is to recognize outstanding achievements by individuals, businesses, organizations, educational institutions, and agencies for successful environmental projects and conservation measures. Also to promote leadership by example and in turn increase conservation of the natural resources of the State of Tennessee – its wildlife, forests, soils, water, natural heritage, parks and recreation, and air.

Icon The awards are designed to bring about a greater knowledge and awareness of environmental and conservation practices and projects, and to give proper recognition to those persons and organizations that make outstanding contributions to the natural resource welfare of their community and the state.
