Stafford Poetry Competition boasts £1000 prize

Budding bards are being encouraged to enter Stafford Poetry Competition to be in with a chance of scooping a top prize of £1000.

The competition has been organised by Staffordshire Library Service and funded by Stafford District Arts Council.

Open to anyone, of any age, from anywhere, potential entrants now have until 28 February 2010 to submit a poem of no more than 40 lines for the consideration of the judge, Michael Hulse, a prize winning poet and university lecturer.

The winning poet will receive a prize of £1000 and five runners up will receive a prize of £50 each.

There is also an extra prize of £250 for the best poem with a local Staffordshire connection. This is an additional prize and may (or may not) be awarded to the first prize winner or a runner up.

County Councillor and Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, Ben Adams, said: "Stafford Poetry Competition is an opportunity for those with a creative streak and a passion for poetry to have their talent recognised and rewarded."

Entries must also be accompanied by a cover sheet including the name and address of the entrant and the title(s) of the poem(s) entered, as well as a cheque for £4.00 made payable to Staffordshire County Council (plus £3.00 each for any extra poems).
