British Bridal Sari competition opens at Charnwood Museum

A National Competition is offering a top prize of £250 to the person who creates a vision of a British Bridal Sari – reflecting the hopes, dreams and experience of a British Asian bride.

Most bridal sari patterns still originate in south Asia – but the British Sari Story 2008 competition is calling for people around the UK to create their own, British embroidery, embellishment and beading.

The top entries will join the British Sari Story touring exhibition – a glorious display of traditional and contemporary saris which celebrates British Asian heritage.

The name of the overall winner will be unveiled when the show is opened at Charnwood Museum, Loughborough, in early October.

“Bridal saris can take the breath away,” says competition organiser, Bridging Arts director Susan Roberts.

“Traditionally their embroidery and beading reflects the traditions of South Asia. But this year – 2008 – we are looking for something new, a British Bridal Sari with British embroidery, embellishment and needlework which will be magnificent in its own way. We might have a tweed sari with a heather embroidered motif – or a Welsh sari with leeks and daffodils. We might have buttons instead of sequins decorating the sari – or a mixture of both!”

Entry to the competition is free. Competitors are asked to create a 20cm square swatch of fabric which they can imagine being created into a bridal sari.

Entry forms can be downloaded from www.bridging-arts.com. The closing date is 31 August 2008.

The British Sari Story national tour is funded by Arts Council England. The original exhibition was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and created by Bridging Arts.

Bridging Arts works with art, design and photography to give people without a voice the chance to speak out, to trigger debate and to open minds. Visit www.bridging-arts.com for more information.

You will next be asked to agree to our Terms and Conditions. The final step is to browse for your image/s, write a caption, and click "Upload My Submission." Once we receive your image/s, we’ll send you a confirmation email.

Before you submit a photograph, please make sure it meets the following requirements:
* JPG or JPEG file format (ex. YourImage.jpg or YourImage.jpeg)
* At least 1,600 pixels wide (if a horizontal image) or 1,600 pixels tall (if a vertical image)
* Total file size must be less than 5 megabytes (MB)

How do I know that you've received my entry?

After you submit your photograph/s, we'll notify you by email that we got it/them.

How many photos may I submit?

You may submit a total of six (6) photos to the contest, in one or more of these categories: People, Places, and Nature. The submission period begins on August 1, 2008, at 12:00 am EST and closes on October 31, 2008, at 11:59 pm EST.

What's the difference between the English Language Photography Contest and the International Photography Contest?

National Geographic magazine is translated and published in 31 local languages. Each of these local language editions may choose to hold its own photography contest.

The contest you may enter here is the English Language Photography Contest, the contest of the English-language edition of the magazine. A winner will be chosen in each of the categories of the English Language Photography Contest, then automatically entered into the International Photography Contest.

In each of the participating local-language editions of National Geographic magazine, winners will also be chosen in each category. From both sets of these winners a single winner will be chosen in each category as the worldwide winner of the International Photography Contest.

How will my photograph be judged?

Judging consists of two (2) rounds of evaluation for each category. In round one, each judge in a panel of photographic experts will select ten (10) entries in each category from among all the eligible entries based on the following criteria: (1) Creativity 50%; (2) Photographic quality 50%.

The entries selected in round one will proceed to round two. In round two, the judges will collectively select a first-place winner in each category.

In the event of a tie, the tied entries will be resubmitted to the judges for a rejudging between the tied entries alone. In the event that a tie remains after rejudging, the entry with the highest score for creativity will be declared the winner.

When will the winner be announced?

Winners of the English Language Photography Contest will be chosen around November 29, 2008, and notified by email.
Winners of the International Photography Contest will be announced on or around December 15, 2008.

What are the prizes?

First-place winners of the English Language Photography Contest will win a digital SLR camera kit. The grand-prize winners of the International Photography Contest will receive a trip to National Geographic headquarters, and the winning entries will be published in the English-language as well as other participating editions of National Geographic magazine.

I'm not a U.S. resident. Can I still participate in the English Edition of the International Photography Contest?

Legal residents of the fifty (50) states of the United States and the District of Columbia, the United Kingdom, Canada (excluding the province of Quebec), Australia, the Republic of Ireland, India, South Africa, and New Zealand may enter the English-language portion of the International Photography Contest.

I'm not a resident of one of the countries listed above. Can I participate in the contest?

Please visit our list of participating local-language edition Web sites offering entry into the International Photography Contest.

It says I must be the age of majority to enter. What is the age of majority?

The age of majority varies from place to place. You can check out your state's Web site or call your government offices to get information specific to your place of residence.

I'm not the age of majority. Is there a photography contest that I can enter?

Please visit the National Geographic Kids website for information on entering the Kids International Photography Contest.

How old can my entry be?

Photographs must have been taken within two years of the date of entry.

I’d like to enter a photo that has previously been published. Is that allowed?

Yes, you may enter a photo that has previously been published.

I’d like to enter a photo that has previously won a contest. Is that allowed?

Photographs that have previously won an award in the National Geographic International Photography Contest or any National Geographic Traveler photography contest in the past three years are not eligible. Photographs that have won other contests may be submitted.

Will my photography be seen online?

Selected entries and the entrants' names may be published on ngm.com at the discretion of the National Geographic Society.

Will I be notified if my photo is chosen for the online galleries?

You will be notified only if you are a Grand Prize winner.

Do photos have to be taken with a digital camera?

Submitted photos do NOT have to be digital photos from a digital camera. Any digital scan will do, as long as the end result is a JPG or JPEG file. You may submit scans of negatives, transparencies, or photographs taken with traditional cameras.

Is image manipulation allowed in the photo contest?

Minor burning, dodging, and color correction are acceptable. Hand tinting is acceptable, as is cropping. Fish-eye lenses are acceptable. High dynamic range images (HDRI) and stitched panoramas are acceptable only if the combined parts are all made around the same time. Any changes to an original photograph not itemized here are unacceptable and will render the photograph ineligible for a prize.
For more information, please read Director of Photography David Griffin's comments on image manipulation.

What should I include in the description of my photograph?

Captions are always a good way to engage others in your photography. So take the time to write about the place, time, setting, and situation.

When I submit a photo to the photo contest, what rights does the National Geographic Society have to my submission?

The nonexclusive, perpetual right to use your image in connection with the contest and promotion of the contest, in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to: Display at a potential exhibition of winners; publication of a book featuring select entries in the contest; publication in National Geographic magazine or online highlighting entries or winners of the contest.

Please read through the photo contest rules for more information on the rights you grant when submitting a photograph to the International Photography Contest.

I accidentally uploaded the wrong photo. Can I delete my entry and submit a new entry?

Unfortunately, due to the large volume of images submitted to the contest, all entries are final and cannot be replaced or modified.

I can't remember which photographs I've already submitted. Can you tell me which of my photographs you've received?

Unfortunately, due to the large volume of images submitted, we're unable to report to you which images you've uploaded.

When submitting your images to the photo contest, you'll be offered the chance to create your own National Geographic web page in our My Shot section of ngm.com. Here you can store and organize all the images you've submitted to the photography contest. We encourage you to take advantage of this feature when entering the contest.

Are release forms required when submitting a photograph to the International Photography Contest?

By submitting a photograph to the International Photography Contest you warrant that you are the owner of the image, that you alone own the copyright, and that you have obtained any necessary third-party releases.

If your photograph is selected as a winner of the contest, you may be asked to submit a personal release, a location release, or an artist release. Please do not send any release unless we've asked you to. Please read through the photo contest rules for more information regarding releases.

The photograph I'd like to submit was taken while I was on vacation. There's no way for me to get a release form. Can I still enter this photograph in the contest?

If your photograph is chosen as a winner of the contest, you may be required to submit a release.

What is a personal release form?

If any person in your photograph is recognizable, you may be asked to provide National Geographic with a personal release form signed by that person or those persons. Images of unrecognizable people do not need personal releases. A personal release form is a binding contract between the photographer and the subject(s) of the photograph. By signing the release, the subject of the photograph forgoes the right to sue for specific types of claims.
Download our printable Personal Release form. (You'll need Acrobat Reader to view the download. Get the free plug-in here.)

Do photos of children require personal release forms?

Yes, if the children are recognizable (see answer above). But personal release forms for anyone under 18 years of age must be signed by the subject's legal guardian—not by the child. Download our printable Personal Release form. (You'll need Acrobat Reader to view the download. Get the free plug-in here.)

What is a location release form?

A location release form is a binding contract between the photographer and the owner(s) of private property within or upon which a photograph was taken. By signing the release, the owner of the property forgoes the right to sue for specific types of claims.
Download our printable Location Release form. (You'll need Acrobat Reader to view the download. Get the free plug-in here.)

What is an artist release form?

An artist release form is a binding contract between the photographer and the copyright holder(s) of any art in the photograph. By signing the release, the copyright holder of the art in the photograph forgoes the right to sue for specific types of claims.
Download our printable Artist Release form.
(You'll need Acrobat Reader to view the download. Get the free plug-in here.)

Why won't my images upload?

Make sure your images meet the following requirements:
* JPG or JPEG file format (ex. YourImage.jpg or YourImage.jpeg)
* At least 1,600 pixels wide (if a horizontal image) or 1,600 pixels tall (if a vertical image)
* Total file size must be under 5 MB

I didn't receive my confirmation email. Why?

Some ISPs (Internet service providers) commonly install email filters that block or filter emails sent from unknown addresses. If you have a "junk mail" box, check to see if that's where the email landed. If you've installed software to monitor your email, make sure your settings aren't causing your emails to get blocked. The emails that we send come from admin@nationalgeographic.com.

008 CGAP Microfinance Photo Contest: Innovators and entrepreneurs

CGAP invites photographers of all levels of expertise to enter the CGAP Microfinance Photo Contest.

Microfinance around the world is a varied and rapidly developing field, and this year's theme, innovators and entrepreneurs, speaks to the creativity of our industry. By sharing your striking images of financial services reaching poor people today with us, you'll reach countless others with the message of microfinance. We know from past results that you'll be inventive in capturing the diversity, dynamism, and impact of our work.

This year, we've added some special categories to reflect our overall theme of innovation. We'd like to see images of entrepreneurial activities at work. How are people using finance in nontraditional ways? What innovations are financial service providers using to serve people who would not otherwise be reached, including those living in rural and remote areas? We hope you'll use your imagination in thinking about the clients of microfinance and those who deliver the innovations to help meet their financial needs.

The judges will select one grand prize winner, one second place winner, and 22 honorable mentions across the whole Contest. Photos that represent innovation in the delivery, oversight, or funding of financial services may also receive awards at the judges' discretion.

The winning images will be published by CGAP in a publication and displayed online at www.cgap.org. They will be included in a slideshow and screensaver that will be shared with the industry for use at conferences. Winning images may be printed for exhibition in partnership with the World Bank and Citi. Winning photographers may receive the prizes listed below.

Please read the following rules carefully.

WHO: The CGAP Microfinance Photo Contest is open to all photographers at least 18 years of age, except the operational team of CGAP and their immediate families.

WHAT: We are looking for original, striking images of microfinance around the world that capture what microfinance means to you. These images may reflect the wide variety of microfinance and microenterprise development around the world, representing a range of products, institutions, and methodologies, and may touch on a broad range of social, economic, developmental, and technological issues. We encourage entries from all regions, in both rural and urban settings. We expect to receive images that represent technology, institutions, money, microfinance transactions and impact, policy/regulation, human capacity, and people and their environment. Photo submissions must be accompanied by a brief description of the photo, including the place and country where it was taken, and how it reflects advancing financial access to people through microfinance.

Entries must be:

• The original work of the entrant

• Noninfringing of the rights of others

• Respectful of the rights, sensitivities, and culture of persons depicted

• An accurate reflection of the subject matter and scene as it appeared, without alteration (other than standard optimization, including removal of dust, cropping, adjustments to color and contrast, etc.)

• A depiction of microfinance and/or microenterprise development in one or more of the following categories:

o General

o Innovation in delivery, whether through new technologies, institutions, or infrastructure

o Innovative approaches to regulating and applying laws that relate to access to finance

o Innovation in funding and supporting microfinance

o Impact

Entries will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit. The story behind the photo, submitted as a paragraph or brief essay, may influence the judges’ decisions. Decisions made by the judges are final.

New this year: At the judges’ discretion, a special award for $250 in photography equipment will be awarded for up to two photographs that depict issues around the use of technology (cards, information systems, mobile phones) and policy and regulatory issues relating to microfinance (e.g., issues around interest rates, transparency, AML/CFT regulations).

JUDGES: Judges will include Elizabeth Littlefield, CGAP CEO and a World Bank director, and professional photographers.

WHEN: All entries, whether submitted electronically or mailed or shipped, must be received by CGAP before noon EST September 15, 2008. CGAP will not be held responsible for mail that was not received. Receipt of packages cannot be acknowledged. Entries will not be returned.

WINNING ENTRIES: Prizes will be awarded as described below. A selection of winning photos may be featured on CGAP’s Web sites, cgap.org and microfinancegateway.org, and in exhibitions at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., and other prestigious venues. Winning images also may be used to decorate CGAP offices and in a slideshow for use at conferences and workshops.

All entries may be used by CGAP in printed publications, on Web sites, in a slideshow and screensaver, or in any other media, and may be copied and displayed in any country, provided that all uses are accompanied by appropriate attribution to the photographer. Entrants retain ownership and all other rights to future use of their photographs. CGAP shall have the right to verify, in its sole judgment, winner eligibility.

LEGAL CONDITIONS: To enter the contest, entrants must agree to certain legal conditions (see section “Legal Conditions”). Entry of photographs into the contest implies acceptance of contest rules, regardless of whether entrants sign a statement confirming acceptance.

Perth Fashion Festival 2008

I always thought fashion festivals are something industry people or ‘girls in the know’ would attend. What the heck.. I have a good excuse to attend now so I went ahead and purchased tickets for ‘ticketed events’. I’m not sure how many of free events I can attend but certainly these shows will hopefully entertain myself as well as my esteemed readers.

Perth Fashion Festival website is built really nicely to my surprise. It also changes the background colours and the imagery so it’s refreshing every time. Unfortunately the site is made with frames – oh I hate frames. Personally I don’t follow models so I don’t know their names but I believe all of them are Australian – would make sense wouldn’t it?

One thing I’m unsure at this point is whether I would be able to take any shots or I would be able to score photos of the runway shows from anywhere. I did write to the media section in the website asking if they had any provision for bloggers. Well, I know.. there’s no way. They would probably ignore my request. Hey who knows? If you guys make enough fuss here in my blog they might consider giving me some access to take photos!

The first show I’m attending is all about swim wear and street fashion on 3 September 2008.

Seafolly I believe is a fairly well known brand worldwide. You can get them at, for example, Nordstrom so they claim in the Seafolly website. The site does have a list of online retailers.

Industrie is one of my favourite men’s wear brands. They are incredibly wearable and not tacky or shabby. They also do women’s but not quite what I would wear tho. The website doesn’t really show its extensive range of shirts and jackets that are just gorgeous. I like this brand so much so that sometimes I wish I was a man!

Elwood, I don’t know this brand. When I googled what came up was an American retailer. The Australian brand doesn’t have a functional website yet so I’ll have to find out what they are like at the show.

I could bring you wealth of interesting local and national designs OR none at all so watch this space!

InterPLAY, the 2008 Cleveland Design Competition, August 22, 2008

WELCOME to the second annual Cleveland Design Competition !!!

On Friday, August 22nd, 2008, the second annual Cleveland Design Competition will open for registration as we launch Project 2008: interPLAY. Maintaining a focus on under-utilized sites, the competition will solicit thoughtful design solutions to Cleveland's unique urban challenges and inherent design opportunities.

This year's competition is set within the condition of population migration back into urban neighborhoods and the need to develop effective social infrastructure to sustain existing populations and attract new residents. As urban cores and inner ring suburbs become more economically and generationally diverse, it is becoming increasingly important to provide viable, active environments capable of fostering interaction despite cultural differences.

For years, play spaces and public recreation facilities have devolved to a great extent into intellectually limiting environments that prescribe specific activities and stint spontaneous interaction. False presumptions of appropriate activities or underprogrammed spaces has left many public parks and plazas underutilized - whether occupied for limited times of day (or seasons of the year), used by a single age group, or serving singular skills and interests. For Project 2008: interPLAY, it will be critical for entrants to rethink social/recreation programming and consider the types of interactions and emotions that a well designed intergenerational public space can elicit.

The 2008 Cleveland Design Competition site, located a few miles west of downtown Cleveland in the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood, is situated at the northern terminus of West 65th Street at the intersection of West 65th and Father Caruso Drive. The site's predominant use is as a multi-purpose pedestrian passageway between the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood and Edgewater Park along Lake Erie.

The Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood is a dramatically changing Cleveland community seeing significant investments in arts and culture, new dining and shopping destinations, renovations of aging housing, and the replacement of lakefront industrial areas with housing and public spaces. Projects transforming and redefining the community range from an eco-village, to the development of a $100 million housing neighborhood on 13-acres overlooking Lake Erie, and the multi-million dollar decommissioning of the West Shoreway from a high speed roadway to a pedestrian scaled, tree line boulevard.

More information on the neighborhood's history and its current condition, the site's geographic constraints, and the competition's objectives will be available in the Competition Brief on the competition website (http://www.clevelandcompetition.com/) beginning August 22nd, 2008.

The 2008 competition is administered by Cleveland architecture professionals Michael Christoff and Bradley Fink, Greg Peckham - Cleveland Public Art, and Steve Rugare - Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative. Interactivity & Empowerment : Eight Innovators Place in 2008 Knight-Batten Awards for Innovations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Four bold, savvy projects – including Web sites that reveal corporate whitewashing of Wikipedia entries, help people map political violence in Kenya, separate fact from falsehood in the 2008 presidential campaign, and deliver hyperlocal coverage of development in the District of Columbia’s most neglected quadrant – are finalists for the Grand Prize in this year’s Knight-Batten Awards for Innovations in Journalism.

Because of the diversity of good ideas, the Advisory Board also cited four efforts for Honorable Mention.

“This year we see how creative minds are using new technologies to connect people with hidden truths and hard-to-find information,” said Jan Schaffer, executive director of J-Lab, which administers the awards program. “We are reminded of journalism’s potential to reinvent itself as well as its fundamental promise to do good.”

“The examples we are heralding show the power of a single person, the power of politics, the power of community,” said Advisory Board chair Jody Brannon, national director of the Carnegie-Knight News21 initiative.

For 2008, a national panel of judges chose winners for a $10,000 Grand Prize, two $2,000 Special Distinction Awards, and a $2,000 Citizen Media Award.

The top winners will be announced Thursday, Sept. 10, at a symposium and luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Highlighting that event will be a keynote address by one of the nation’s leading media innovators : Bill Kling, President and CEO of American Public Media, Minnesota Public Radio, and Chair of Gather.com. To attend the awards symposium and luncheon, register here : http://www.j-lab.org/kb08symposiumreg.shtml or email news@j-lab.org. The event is free, but space is limited and pre-registration is required.

Gary Kebbel, Knight Foundation journalism program director, said, “The Knight-Batten Awards continue to be the bellwether of journalism innovation. Mashups, crowdsourcing and non-profit journalism all were recognized early as trends that were changing daily journalism.”

The Knight-Batten Awards honor creative uses of new technologies to engage citizens in public issues and showcase compelling models for the future of news. They are administered by J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism at American University’s School of Communication. You can view the finalists as well as 24 other notable entries at www.j-lab.org. This year’s finalists are:

* Ushahidi : Crowdsourcing Crisis Information – Modeling urgent grassroots information-sharing in a time of crisis, Kenyan techies launched a site where bloggers and citizen journalists could text eyewitness accounts and map incidents of political violence in the wake of a corrupted presidential election.

* Wired.com’s WikiScanner Coverage – Using Virgil Griffith’s Wikipedia Scanner, WIRED magazine’s blog engaged readers in crowdsourced exposés revealing PR spinmeisters’ editing of Wikipedia entries not favorable to a company’s reputation.

* JDLand.com – A one-woman citizen media project documents and visualizes real estate development, construction and community concerns in Washington D.C.’s rapidly changing Southeast neighborhood.

* PolitiFact.com – A collaboration between the St. Petersburg Times and Congressional Quarterly features a rich database for the 2008 presidential election allowing users to sort news items by candidate, issue or ruling. The site’s “Truth-o-Meter” rates the accuracy of campaign messages and statements; its “Pants on Fire” feature calls false statements to account.

Honorable Mentions are:

* Hope: Living and Loving with HIV in Jamaica – A multimedia reporting project using poetry as a nontraditional entry way into documentary coverage of HIV/AIDS in Jamaica. Commissioned by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

* Iowa’s Deadly Tornado – After a tornado ripped through Parkersburg, Iowa, The Des Moines Register created a house-by-house color-coded map embedded with first-person survivor accounts, surveillance and cell phone video, before and after photographs, and obituaries to chronicle the path of destruction.

* iReport.com – CNN’s ground-breaking user-generated news site invites viewers to upload and rate stories; some are later used in the cable network’s programs after being verified and expanded by CNN reporters.

* U.S. Congress MAPLight.org – A massive database that tracks campaign contributions and voting records of all members of Congress, illuminating patterns of money and influence on a daily basis.

The winners were selected by an Advisory Board that, in addition to Brannon, included the Knight Foundation’s Gary Kebbel and Jose Zamora; Jim Brady, Executive Editor, washingtonpost.com; Bill Buzenberg, Executive Director, Center for Public Integrity; Nick Charles, Vice President for Digital Content, BET Interactive; Lee Rainie, Executive Director, Pew Internet & American Life Project; Chuck Lewis, Investigative Journalism Workshop, American University School of Communication; Wendell Cochran, Professor, American University School of Communication; Chris Harvey, Merrill College of Journalism, University of Maryland; and Jan Schaffer, J-Lab Executive Director.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation makes grants to help transform journalism and communities.

J-Lab helps news organizations and citizens use digital technologies to develop new ways for people to participate in public life. It also administers the Knight Citizen News Network (www.kcnn.org), the New Voices community media grant program (www.j-newvoices.org). and the McCormick New Media Women Entrepreneurs initiative (www.newmediawomen.org).

Novel Competitions

I've updated the competition calendar quite extensively today, and thought I'd draw special attention to two competitions aimed at novel writers.

The first one, The McKitterick Prize, is run by the Society of Authors and is FREE to enter. with a whopping prize of £4000 for the winner. It's also aimed at authors over 40 years of age, so well done them! You can either send in a published novel (but it must be your first novel, and you can't have had any novels published before that - children's novels don't count), or if you haven't had a novel published, you can submit the first 30 pages (and yes, I did try this with my Raven novel last year but got nowhere). PDF entry form. You must have a completed novel ready to send them if they ask though. Closing date: 20th December 2008

The second novel competition is the Rose and Crown novel competition, for 'inspirational romance' novels. It costs £20 to enter. The first prize is £200 and the second prize is £100, plus a guaranteed publishing contract to both winners, and any others deemed suitable for publication. The novel must have a Christian outlook, "even if the Christian references are only slight, the tone should satisfy a Christian audience." If you're not sure what this means, their normal guidelines state:

Please avoid blasphemy, foul language, gratuitous sex/sensuality, violence,
racism, and hate speech - even if by a non-Christian character.

(I was surprised to find out that this is a British publisher as I was sure, for some reason, they'd be American). Closing date : 15th January 2009
