The PEN camera was even used by Olympus to shoot its most recent network television commercial.
  • After a short tutorial from award-winning cinematographer, producer and cameraman, Kris Krosskove, and an overview on the product by the Olympus technical staff, it’s lights, camera, action and the two day competition in one of North America’s most famous and beautiful winter playgrounds begins.

WHAT DO YOU WIN
The winning team of filmmakers (limit five per team) will receive a cash prize of $5,000, an Olympus PEN interchangeable lens camera kit, VIP passes to the 2012 Vail Film Festival and a private meet-and-greet with an award-winning Hollywood filmmaker.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME IF I DON’T WIN
  • All competitors who submit approved completed entries will have the chance for VIPS, celebs, industry experts and marketers to see their work appear on the big screen at the Vail Film Festival and the opportunity to appear in an Olympus Behind the Scenes Contest Documentary and the chance to have your footage, vision and possibly even your film appear on the Vail Film Festival and Olympus Imaging America Websites and social media channels (Facebook, YouTube and Twitter), where it could reach hundreds of thousands of additional viewers around the world.
  • Additionally, top teams may be introduced to trade, industry and lifestyle media which may even garner additional attention for your work.

JUDGING REQUIRMENTS
  • Originality and creativity - 1/3
  • Creative use of the PEN camera - 1/3
  • Technical Quality - 1/3

WHERE DO I SIGN UP?
Registration begins March 1, 2011 and will continue through 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2011. Interested filmmakers are encouraged to either register in advance of the festival by sending an email to Olympus48@vailfilmfestival.org, or register in person at the festival Will Call Office beginning Tuesday, March 29, 2011. Filmmakers who enter early also receive a second chance to enter their film with changes!

Ceremony and screenings

Screenings will be continuous throughout the conference and the winning films will be shown at the closing ceremony.

The awards will be handed out the last day of the Midwifery Today Conference in Strasbourg, France. The filmmakers’ presence is not required but it will be fun to be there. If filmmakers are not present their award will be e-mailed.

Spirit of the Conference

Midwifery Today has been working since 1985 to bring women and care givers evidence-based information about optimal birth and the different ways to provide it.

Midwifery Today, Inc., is committed to promoting safe, healthy and happy outcomes for mothers and babies, and believes that the midwifery model of non-interventive, preventive care should be the standard of care throughout the world.

As we reach the end of the first decade of this millennium, spreading information about better birth becomes crucial to the future of birth around the world. We have seen increases in the rates of cesareans, inductions, augmentations and so on, as well as various conditions resulting from the industrialization of birth—such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bonding and breastfeeding difficulties, respiratory conditions, poor bio-neurological beginnings and other health conditions. For these reasons policy-makers, hospital administrators, care givers and parents must strive for the education of the general public about the best options for pregnancy and birth and bring on a bright future for the emerging birth culture and the birth of our children.

Our culture is increasingly media-oriented and, as a result, films such as Orgasmic Birth, What Babies Want and The Business of Being Born, as well as podcasts and Web information inspire couples to make better decisions for their births. Consequently, caregivers have an incentive to propose new protocols for maternity care with the information families need.

In this spirit we invite all of you to participate in the Midwifery Today short film contest in Strasbourg, France, 2010.

Whether a filmmaker, midwife, doctor, doula, parent, artist or activist, you can participate by entering a short film in any of the three categories below.

We appreciate documentary-style, advertising style, parody and fiction.

You may include any birth footage or interviews as long as you have written permission from the "actors" and/or filmmakers.

Judges: Jan Tritten, Debra Pascali-Bonaro, Robbie Davis-Floyd, Elena Piantino and Naolí Vinaver. (Please click linked names for biographies.)
HOW TO ENTER

Please check back in January 2010 for instructions about entering contest.
Filmmaker’s Guidelines

Length: 4 to 10 minutes

Category description :

* Best Short Doc: Documentary-style presenting a particular subject concerning optimal birth. As a guideline, please read the International Motherbaby Childbirth Initiative (www.imbci.org/ShowPage.asp?id=174). Facts and statistics must be from a reliable source. Interviews with health care providers, educators, expectant couples, and new parents give depth to the message.
* Make ’em laugh: Laughing is always a door-opener and an excellent way to get your message across. Create a parody or a comical fiction that will aid in getting optimal birth practices instituted. Explain or portray the paradoxes in maternity care (for example: Monty Python’s "The Meaning of Life"). Be respectful.
* Advertise Optimal birth: you want to campaign for better birth…how would you advertise? Be creative and come up with an ad to make knowledge about optimal choices for birth available to all.

Requirements

* By entering the contest you represent that your video is original and has been legally created, that you own all rights to the video and have obtained permission from each person who is included in the video, as well as being authorized to use any copyrighted material. You also agree to make written copies of such permissions available upon request. If a minor is included in the film, you must have written permission from the parent or legal guardian.
* You agree that your video meets all YouTube legal and community requirements. (www.youtube.com/t/terms)
* When you upload to YouTube use the following tags "video contest" "Midwifery today" "Midwifery Today short-film contest" "Midwifery Today Strasbourg 2010 short-film contest" "birth" and any others to your liking
* Enter the film to the contest by submitting the entry form, proof of payment and the link to your film.
* You can enter as many films as you want.

SMIBE Short Film Competition 2010

Deadline : March 31, 2010

COMPETITION BRIEF
With its second annual competition, SMIBE continues to bring together a growing body of moving image stories about the built environment. We hope the competition will become a forum for the exchange and discussion of persuasive issues about the built world. For this competition, SMIBE welcomes moving image stories that investigate, explore, and entertain our communities about social, environmental, political, technological, and economic issues that designers of the built world should be discussing.

What are issues that we should be addressing in our built world?
To answer this question, SMIBE turns to our talented community of professionals, college and university students from architecture, landscape, art, industrial design, interior design, motion graphics and film to offer a challenge: produce a three minute, engaging and entertaining moving image story about “Personal Infrastructures.” We are looking for stories about memorable characters and the infrastructures in their lives. Enlighten and entertain us with stories about infrastructure, either on a personal scale, public scale or somewhere in between.

Above all, we look for groundbreaking work that blends rigorous craft with intelligent storytelling. Submissions should not exceed 3 minutes in duration and can be produced in any motion image medium. Entry is free.

Five general category and five student category submissions will be chosen as Finalists by a panel of prestigious judges invited by SMIBE. Subsequently, these judges will select two of the ten finalists, one general category finalist and one student category finalist, to be awarded a Grand Prize of $500 each and a unique SMIBE trophy. In addition, the top ten finalists will have their videos screened at the MAK Center in Los Angeles and at the Graham Foundation in Chicago.

Upon submission, contestants will be asked to share information about their submissions and themselves on the SMIBE.org website. There will also be an online forum for audiences to discuss the presented work. We hope this sharing of work will inspire us as much as the challenge itself.

TIMING
Contestants may submit entries at here beginning January 1, 2010, and ending March 31, 2010. All entries must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on March 31, 2010. Contestants must be registered and logged-in in order to submit their entry.

PRIZES
Ten Finalist Prizes
The ten finalist films will be publicly screened in Los Angeles and in Chicago, and will be featured on the smibe.org website.

These 10 Finalists will be submitted to the final selection jury who will select two Grand Prize winners, one for each category.
