Iran Progressive Youth Essay Competition

Share your ideas and prospects concerning the possibilities of change in Iran. The top three essays will be published in accredited journal(s) and will also receive a cash prize

Since the Presidential Election in Iran in June 2009, there has been an ongoing debate among and between different national and international political and social groups about the possibilities of change in Iran. Nevertheless, the issue has not been dealt with from an academic perspective sufficiently and adequately.

The Iranian Progressive Youth (IPY) is an independent association which aims at establishing a platform for political, cultural and social activities with special focus on the Iranian struggle for freedom and democracy. As part of its ongoing efforts, IPY has organized an International Essay Contest among students and researchers from different disciplines and has called for answers to the following question:

What are the ways to bring about a democratic change in Iran?

The IPY “International Essay Contest” encourages the interested parties to investigate and explore their ideas – from the idealistic to the realistic – in response to this question from either one, or a combination of, the following perspectives :
  1. The role and prospect of the Civil Society;
  2. The influence of the Political Structure;
  3. The position and responsibility of International Community.

The top three essays will be published in internationally accredited journal(s) and
  1. the first-prize essay will receive €500 and the IPY Essay Award;
  2. the second-prize essay will receive €250;
  3. the third-prize essay will receive €150.

Moreover, all the submitted essays will be published on the essay contest’s website.

Participation in this essay contest is open to any (former) student and researcher of any institution of higher education in any field and discipline.

The theme of the essays should be directly linked to Iran and the 2009 Presidential election and its aftermath and will be judged on two criteria :
  1. Scientific quality, especially in deepening the understanding of the subject and its social relevance.
  2. Innovative elements, creativity and originality in subject matter and its effects, and/or delving into a subject that has been presented but not explored in sufficient depth.

Submitted essays must :
  1. be in English or Dutch;
  2. be between 1500 – 2500 words. Essays longer than 3000 will not accepted;
  3. be in Word Document format (.doc and not .docx) (font ‘Times New Roman’, size 12, double spacing);
  4. be delivered digitally to essay@iranpy.net / CD-ROM, Floppy Disks, videos and tapes are not accepted.
  5. be received by 10th April 2011 9:00 PM GMT

The participants are requested to download and fill out the ‘Participation Form’ from the essay contest website. (link)
  • IPY will appoint a jury which will consist of 3 university teachers/professors from Dutch Universities in different fields and 3 Parliamentarians from the Dutch Parliament and the European Parliament. The IPY Board holds one vote in this jury.
  • The members of the jury will be announced in due time.

Participants in the contest will receive a confirmation of their submission. The authors of the selected essays will be informed by 25th April 2011; the essays which have not been selected will receive a notification around the same time.

Only papers that meet all the conditions mentioned in this document will be assessed.

Exeter Writing Contest For Students (Deadline March 2011)

The Exeter Historical Society would like to invite students in grades 6 through 12 to compete for the Nancy Carnegie Merrill History Award by writing a research paper in honor of our esteemed former curator for her invaluable contributions to the preservation and interpretation of our local history.

Students at the Cooperative Middle School and Exeter High School are invited to enter by contacting faculty members in their social studies departments.

Students who do not attend one of the above-mentioned schools may enter by contacting the Exeter Historical Society for further information. Topics should focus on an aspect of our communal past related to the theme “Exeter at the Time of the Civil War.” Students should not attempt to write the research paper without receiving the judges’ criteria and requirements from their school’s faculty members or the staff of the Exeter Historical Society.

A panel of judges will choose one entry from each school division that best meets the criteria of outstanding achievement in format, historical accuracy, originality, and style.

Winning papers will be read by the authors at an awards ceremony on April 21, 2011.

A $100 prize will also be awarded to each winner.

Seacoast Credit Union of Hampton and Exeter is generously sponsoring the award for the fifth consecutive year.

The staff of the Exeter Historical Society welcomes interested students to visit and explore our collection for ideas and inspiration.

It is our hope that the Nancy Carnegie Merrill Award will foster an appreciation for our community and an interest in its past.

The award is named for Nancy Carnegie Merrill, esteemed citizen and Exeter town historian.

Mrs. Merrill, a graduate of The College of William & Mary in Virginia and Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, moved to Exeter, NH, from her native Ohio in 1949 to be the school nurse for SAU16.

Her nursing career ceased in 1952 when she married David D. Merrill.

After her husband’s death in 1975, she earned her Master of Library Science degree from the University of Rhode Island and served as the reference librarian at the Exeter Public Library.

Mrs. Merrill’s interest in local history, backed by her skill and patience as a researcher, has benefited readers of her many newspaper articles and of her important 1988 town history, Exeter, New Hampshire 1888-1988.

During her career as a local historian, Mrs. Merrill was the director of collections at the Exeter Historical Society for 25 years, as well as serving on the New Hampshire American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, as a trustee of the New Hampshire Historical Society and historian of The Congregational Church.

Mrs. Merrill retired from the society in 2000.

The submission deadline for research papers is Tuesday, March 22, 2011.

Third Annual Armenian Genocide Essay Competition to Take Place in Metro Detroit

The Armenian Genocide Committee of Greater Detroit announces the third annual Armenian Genocide Essay competition and call for entries. The competition, which is funded by the Hagopian Family Foundation, recognizes and awards Michigan middle and high school students who have written a successful essay on the first genocide of the 20th Century, often called “the forgotten genocide.”

This is the third year that this statewide competition has been offered to students with the hope that it will stimulate a comparative study of the many aspects surrounding the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey with other genocides in modern history.

Some suggested themes for this Essay Competition include events which precipitated the Armenian Genocide and other genocides, actions and/or responses taken by individuals and governments in response to the Armenian Genocide and other genocides, and whether the US Government should formally recognize the Armenian Genocide. Complete guidelines can be found at www.essaycompetition2010.com.

Edgar Hagopian, chair of the Armenian Genocide Committee and Patriarch of the Hagopian Family Foundation, stated that he “feels this project is a critical and vital key to perpetuating the history of the Armenian people in the minds of students as well as having them learn that a comprehensive study of the Armenian Genocide will aid and educate legislators and leaders to avert future tragedies.” “It is the youth of our nation that will look back to help not only this country move forward, but hopefully, one day the world,” Hagopian concluded.

Instructors may submit their student’s essay entries to The Armenian Genocide Committee at 850 S. Old Woodward, Birmingham, MI 48009, on or before the deadline of April 8. All entries will be judged by a committee consisting of members of the Metro Detroit Armenian Community and winners will be formally announced on April 15. The awards will be presented at a 2010 Armenian Genocide Commemoration on or about April 26; further details will be announced.

The awards given to high school students include: first place, $500, second place, $250, and third place $100; for middle school students : first place, $250, second place, $150 and third place, $100.

In addition, each teacher of the student submitting a winning essay will be given a $100 appreciation award. For additional information, contact The Armenian Genocide Committee by e-mailing Hagopian@aol.com.

Often, the imagery associated with developing nations captures the misery that accompanies poverty. While it is important that these things are taken seriously and are documented, we believe that developing nations also represent tremendous opportunities for hope. The “I am an Entrepreneur” competition strives to reframe the dialogue around solutions to poverty by infusing the world's imagination with new imagery that focuses on entrepreneurship. Our objective with this competition is to gather stunning photographs profiling individual entrepreneurs from around the globe.
