Atlantic Challenge International Contest of Seamanship 2010

'Vitalite under sail - Atlantic Challenge International Contest of Seamanship' Scott Wagg

During the summer of 2010, Midland Bay will be home to international crews of youth participating in a friendly contest of seamanship from July 24 to 31st. The crews from countries such as France, Italy, Belgium, Indonesia, Russia, Ireland, Denmark and others will participate in sailing, rowing and other events using replica 18th century 38' wooden longboats on Georgian Bay.

The Atlantic Challenge International Contest of Seamanship is a biannual event that brings member countries together for a week long gathering where mixed crews of youth participate in a variety of events. The event aims to encourage traditional maritime skills and to foster friendship and harmony between youth, nations and cultures. The crews, made up of youth ages 15 and up learn to manoeuvre these replica boats under sail and oars through a series of events.

These events include a traditional sailing race, sailing and rowing combined, rowing, rudderless slalom, jackstay transfer, man overboard, Captain's gig and navigation. Each event requires the crew of 13 to work together as a team to complete each event in the least amount of time, or with the most finesse such as the Captain's gig. The Captain's gig event provides an opportunity for the crews to show off their expertise in controlling the 38' boat as they dock, pick up a dignitary and transport them to a waiting ship. Other events, strive to mix crews from around the world to provide an opportunity for crews to get to know each other and develop international relationships.

Atlantic Challenge was first begun in 1984 and since then has grown to 12 nations and over 70 longboats throughout the world. Canada participated in events since 1992 and last hosted the event in 1994 in Penetanguishene. Next year, several crews will be coming early to train in the area so expect to see these majestic boats sailing in the Midland area for most of July.

Google Model Your Town Competition 2010

Deadline is 11:59 PM PST on March 1, 2010

What makes your town an incredible place to live?

Show your civic pride (and maybe win a prize) by creating a 3D portrait of your community and sharing it with the world. You have the power to get your town on the map – and there's no bigger map than Google Earth.

See what other towns have done (Google Earth file)

The Google Model Your Town Competition is open to people from all over the world.
All you have to do is build 3D models of the buildings in your community. Model whichever structures you think are necessary to show the planet what's special about your town.

Be recognized by your community for doing something great.

Having a 3D model of your town in Google Earth helps residents and visitors understand it in a way that flat maps and photographs can't. You can be a local hero by making a contribution to your town's future.

Getting started is easy.

You can enter on your own or recruit up to five of your fellow citizens to help you form a team, and the software tools you need are free.

Get started today

Follow us on Twitter.

Details, details

You can model as many structures as you like – which types of buildings you choose to include is entirely up to you. The important thing is that your choices say something about the character and history of your town.

Modeling teams may include up to six members.

Buildings can be modeled with SketchUp, a free and relatively easy-to-use 3D modeling program from Google. You use SketchUp in combination with Google Earth to give models a precise geographic location.
Buildings can also be modeled with Google Building Maker if your town is located in an area where Building Maker data is available. These models can also be edited and improved with Google SketchUp.
Each completed building model should be uploaded to a dedicated town collection on the Google 3D Warehouse.
Join our Google Competition Group to discuss ideas and issues with other modelers. It's also a great way to find people to help you form a team.
To enter, each team must complete and submit an online entry form.
The competition submission deadline is 11:59 PM PST on March 1, 2010.
For more information, please take a look at our list of Frequently Asked Questions and at the Getting Started page. You might also consult the official rules before you enter.

Judging

Entries will be judged on the basis of the following general criteria:

Accuracy: Your models' scale, location and orientation must be as true-to-life as possible.
Photo-texturing: "Paint" your models with photographs of the actual buildings. Use photo-editing software to create textures that are devoid of trees, cars, people and other visual clutter.
Efficiency: Make sure your town loads quickly in Google Earth by keeping your models simple.
Detail: Create a sense of place by emphasizing things that make your town unique.
Metadata: Include plenty of text information about the buildings you upload.
Coverage: While quality is more important than quantity, model as much as you can to provide a compelling 3D experience for online visitors.
Elegance: Strive for a combination of beautiful textures, lightweight models and rich metadata.
Take a look at our list of Acceptance Criteria to get a good idea of what you're shooting for.

Finalists will be picked by an internal team of SketchUp experts. From among those finalists, a winner will be decided by a public vote that will take place on this website. The winning town will be announced by May 15, 2010.

Prizes

The winning individual/team will receive:

USD$10,000 for the town's public school district (or international equivalent)
a visit from a Google team, along with an event in the winners' honor
a video profile of the winning team and their town, to be featured on YouTube
a virtual tour of the winning town that will be added to the Google Earth website
international publicity in the form of blog posts, tweets and other media
additional coverage on Google websites

Lighting Rural Tanzania Competition 2010 (LRTC 2010)

Deadline : December 31, 2009

Prize : US$ 100,000

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL (RFP): LIGHTING RURAL TANZANIA COMPETITION 2010 (LRTC2010)

1. Introduction

Lighting Rural Tanzania Competition 2010 (LRTC2010) is a competitive grant program that will support private enterprises in developing and delivering a wide array of modern lighting products for rural households and businesses. Lighting Rural Tanzania will build upon the base of lighting technologies that exist today, seeking market solutions to provide an array of products with the quality, applications, costs, or configurations needed by the low income market segment. Energy for these lights could be from renewable energy, mechanical, or other non-fossil fuel sources. These small-scale projects not only deliver results, but also have the potential to be expanded or replicated elsewhere.

The competition will focus on increasing access to renewable energies; improve technologies and reduction of uses of weak lamps, kerosene lamps and candles. The objective of (LRTC2010) is to recognize and support innovative initiatives that increase access to sustainable, affordable, and energy services for people in rural Tanzania and have credible potential for replication and scaling-up. The Lighting Rural Tanzania will be held in collaboration with the World Bank.

2. Who Should Participate

Proposals are invited from a range of development innovators - civil society groups, social entrepreneurs, private foundations, government agencies, academia, the private sector, and individuals.

3. Program Objective

The overall Program Objective is the provision of clean, affordable, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy services to rural communities in Mainland Tanzania.

* The following are specific objectives of the competition:
* Increase access to modern lighting systems for households, schools and health centers.
* Improve technology for production of low cost renewable energy products.
* Bring to the market, products that are competitive in terms of price.
* Build sustainable technical and commercial capabilities of rural energy entrepreneurs to operate and sustainably manage renewable energy systems.
* Enhance project developers’ competencies in preparing viable and bankable project proposals.

4. Lighting Rural Tanzania Competition Themes

* Service Delivery: Sustainable and large scale delivery of lighting products and services in rural Tanzania, including removal of existing barriers.
* Product Innovation: Responding to consumer and market needs via development and commercialization of high quality, durable, efficient, low cost lighting products/services.
* Environment: Renewable energy, clean energy technologies, energy efficiency, and/or environmentally sustainable solutions to meet lighting needs of households, small enterprises, communities, etc.
* Health: Protecting health from environmental risk factors, such as indoor air pollution and improper disposal of hazardous material. Reliance on wood fuels combined with inadequate housing/cooking facilities lead to a high incidence of respiratory infection from indoor air pollution, and contributes to deforestation, soil erosion, and environmental degradation. Moreover, the lack of energy for basic human activity such as agriculture, transport, medical care, communication, education, and enterprise further marginalizes poor people and limits their ability to increase their incomes.
* Natural Resources: Sustainable management of natural resources (land, water, forests) specifically for the provision of water supply, sanitation and energy to off-grid rural communities.

The competition seeks to support innovative and sustainable local-level solutions that improve the quality of and access to modern energy services for off-grid communities in Mainland Tanzania. In doing so, the Rural Energy Agency and the community will gain valuable insights on providing effective and efficient service delivery to these people.

5. Eligibility Criteria

The competition is open to a wide variety of organizations, including Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), international partners, private foundations, universities and schools, private sector groups, individuals, and local and municipal governments. Proposals will be screened to ensure that they conform to the following criteria:

o Private businesses, individuals, non-profit organization such as NGOs/CSOs, foundations and universities/schools are eligible.
o Municipal and local government agencies are eligible to apply in partnership with at least one of the other different organizations mentioned above.
* Implementation time frame: Proposed activities must be completed within 18 months of receiving the initial disbursement from LRTC2010.
* Results: The output or results outlined in proposals should be measurable and demonstrate a direct impact on improving the access to services by poor and marginalized households in an environmentally sound manner. Projects with the sole output of research, such as publications or conferences/forums with no directly verifiable results on the ground, will be ineligible. The proposals should also demonstrate financial viability and the potential to scale up.

3. The Design Competition starts January 15th, 2010
The challenge will be to design an eco-affordable house according to 8 eco-architecture principles which stimulate:
1. Affordability
2. Exchangeability
3. Sustainability.

All the detailed information such as judging criteria and the Design Case will be published on the platform as soon as the competition kicks-off. These are some of the criteria that will be taken into account to evaluate all submitted designs.
• Affordability
• Contextual fit
• Uniqueness of idea
• Technical viability

Background information
OS-house conducted a research in Ghana to get a better understanding of Ghana's housing situation. These research findings contain essential information that will help you create a design with a higher social, technical and economical viability.

During this research many Ghanaian students got involved in the project and will join the competition. Imagine using Ghanaian input in your design phase. The input you received during a chat session with an architect student or a local builder who not only lives in Ghana, but is also interested in creating housing solutions in his/her neighborhood. That unique country knowledge and involvement is nowhere else available and will definitely help you submit a tailored-environment house design.

4. Deadline and submission format.
May 17th, 2010. Before this date all designs must be submitted digitally. The Design Case, which will be published on the 17th of January, describes the format and drawings to deliver. Contestants are asked to deliver designs considering all house components -foundation, structure, floor, facade, roof- and its set of connections.

5. The winning design
To test the technical and economical feasibility as well as the social perception, the winning design will be build in a pilot project in Ghana. Joining the competition is your chance to establish your name as an architect while witnessing your design being built and used by its new residents.
Also the design of the best University and Design Agency will be awarded.

6. The Open Source Phase
After the Design Competition all submitted designs will be published on the OS-house platform. Here they are available for further improvement as well as for local builders, who can implement them. Whether from a western, eastern, northern or southern country, everyone will be invited to bring in new designs and improvements to designs already available.
