Once again, we're calling all local shutterbugs to capture the Quintessential Image that depicts the essence of Smithfield & Isle of Wight County. The Grand Prize winner, with a photo credit, will be featured on the cover of our 2011 brochure (100,000 copies distributed). Additionally all of the entries in the contest will be displayed at the Arts Center@319 during the first two weeks of May !
"Follow Your HeART to Smithfield & Isle of Wight County" Category Competition
In keeping with Virginia Tourism Corporation’s LOVE Campaign and in honor of downtown Smithfield’s recent designation as an “Arts & Culture District," we'll also be awarding 5 prizes in our each of the following categories :
- “Love is at the HeART of it all” - Images of Families enjoying Smithfield & Isle of Wight.
- “Make falling in LOVE a Historic Occasion in Smithfield & Isle of Wight” – Wedding images taken in one of the many uniquely beautiful wedding venues in the area such as: the Smithfield Center, the Isle of Wight Wedding Chapel, Windsor Castle Park, Historic St. Luke’s Church, Boykin’s Tavern, the Old Courthouse of 1750, Smithfield Station, the Smithfield Inn, Hampton Inn & Suites and Mansion on Main Bed & Breakfast.
- “Where LOVE Blooms” – Images of Smithfield’s new Windsor Castle Park
- “LOVE to Explore?” – Images of the area’s many significant Historic Sites such as: the Isle of Wight County Museum, Historic Fort Huger, Fort Boykin Historic Park, Boykin’s Tavern, the Schoolhouse Museum, Nike Park, the Old Courthouse of 1750, the 1800 Courthouse, or one of the many beautiful buildings featured on Smithfield’s Historic Downtown Walking Tour.
- “Grown with Lots of LOVE” – Images celebrating Smithfield & Isle of Wight’s rich Agricultural Heritage.
- “The HeART of Downtown Smithfield” - Images depicting Historic Main Street.
Contest Details
- The contest is open to amateurs and professionals alike of any age.
- Each photographer may enter up to 5 images and images can win in more than one category.
- All entries will be eligible for the Grand Prize and all images will be eligible for each of the 5 additional categories.
- Photographers may suggest a category that their image fits into, but are not required to do so.
- The image must have been taken in Smithfield and/or Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
- The image should feature Smithfield and/or Isle of Wight County as the subject matter.
- The photo can be digitally manipulated, “photo-shopped,” or cropped as the photographer chooses.
- The photo cannot be a composite image featuring more than one photo.
- The photos must be original and not have previously been published in any promotional material, website, etc.
- Each photographer can enter up to 5 images and can win in more than one category.
- Images can be color or black and white.
- Entries must be submitted digitally via email or burned on a CD. Prints are not necessary.
- Digital entries must be high resolution files in the JPG (jpeg) format and should be no smaller than 500 kb (kilobytes) in size. Image size should be no smaller than 10” on their longest edge.
- Name the digital file as follows: Photo’s Title by Photographer’s Name (example: Morning by John Doe)
- You do not have to choose a category for the entries.

- Address for CD: 319 Main Street, Smithfield, VA 23430…please mark “PHOTO CONTEST” on package. Arrangements can be made for the CD to be picked up at the Visitors Center after the contest is finished.
- Entries must include a signed entry form which can be mailed separately if necessary.
- If the image contains distinguishable faces of people, the entry must include a photo release signed by each person.
- All photos submitted as entries to the contest become the property of the Smithfield & Isle of Wight CVB. Entrants give rights thereof to the CVB. The CVB reserves the right to use the entries and publish the image. The CVB reserves the right to refuse to display any image on its website for aesthetic or other reasons.
- Entry indicates participants agree to be bound by the terms of the photo contest.
- The winner will be announced at the Visitors Center in May (date tba) and entries will be displayed at the Arts Center@319 the first 2 weeks of May.
- Entry deadline : via email or postmark is April 25, 2011 by 4:30 p.m.

Brett England, Lee Poe (Fairfield Photography) and Lois Chapman (Smithfield & Isle of Wight CVB)
Judging Criteria :
- Entries will be judged on overall photographic and artistic quality, promotional appeal, reproducibility and best expression of the theme.
- Prize: The winning photo will be printed on the cover of Smithfield & Isle of Wight CVB’s 2011 Rack Brochure (with photo credit), 100,000 in print, distributed throughout the region and beyond.
- The winners will be announced at the Visitors Center in May during National Tourism Month (date TBA).
