The theme is open so your story really can be on any subject or in any style. Be as creative and as imaginative with your entry as you like.

Word count is a maximum 2000.

Submissions must be original and previously unpublished.

As our writing competitions are for money, writers must be 18 and over to win a cash prize.

Please note that it can take some time for our writing competitions to be judged and the winners announced. The length of time is dependant on the number of submissions received. We take the judging process very seriously and ensure that the best submission wins. This means that each submission is read and re-read to build up a high quality short list and then the process begins again.

The 5th Robert J. DeMott Short Prose Contest -- Submissions

Submit your prose-poem, short-short fiction, essay in-brief, etc. of 500 words or fewer. The only criterion (besides length) is that all submissions work innovatively with the prose form.

Include a title page with your name, address, phone number, the title of your submission(s), and an email address. Your name must not appear on the manuscript(s). The reading fee is $15 for three pieces and includes a copy of Vol. 16 (Spring 2010). Please make checks payable to Quarter After Eight.

Previously published material is not eligible. Manuscripts will not be returned. The contest deadline is June 15, 2010. We will notify you of our decisions by email. Prize money will be awarded upon publication.

2010 OGJ RESEARCH / ESSAY CONTEST COMPETITION RULES AND GUIDELINES

Objective

The purpose of this competition is to highlight the importance of the freedom of
information concept in modern, democratic society; to enhance awareness by the
international community about legal issues concerning the growth and operation of
the freedom-of-information concept; and, to encourage contributors to the Open
Government Journal to take a proactive, informed approach to contemporary legal
issues by researching, writing and analyzing such issues.

Authors published in the Open Government Journal may discuss various aspects
related to the introduction and proliferation of the freedom-to-information concept
across the community of nations by focusing, for instance, on national legislation and policies, institutions, technology, social, governmental or political organization, human nature, psychology, history, philosophy or alternatively, by comparing the application of various legislative regimes to give life to the freedom-to-information concept.

Entrants Eligibility

All research papers submitted before June 30th, 2010 to be published in the Open
Government Journal are eligible for the prize.

Prize

The winning author will receive $500.00 CDN. The prize is not transferable or
exchangeable. Entries for the contest must be received by no later than June 30th,
2010.

Judging Panel

The judging panel will comprise three suitably experienced representatives appointed
by the Editor of the Open Government Journal. The judging panel's decision upon the
award and distribution of the prize is final. No correspondence will be entered into
regarding the judges' decision.

Competition Conditions

1. Articles must be a minimum of 2,500 words, excluding footnotes.
2. Articles must be the original work of the Author. If used, references must be
provided, listing information sources used in the article. Plagiarism will not be
accepted.
3. Each article will be judged based on the following weighted factors:
a. 85%. Quality of Work, Each article will be judged upon their submitted
critical or scholarly essay and upon their demonstrated academic
excellence in accordance with universally recognized scholastic standards.
b. 5%. Creativity,
c. 5%. Originality,
d. 5%. Practicality. The subject matter and the recommendations contained
in the article deemed to be of interest for the professional literature,
national governments or the media.

The mining and resources sector was certainly not immune to the effects of the global economic downturn in 2009, clearly though, there was still much to celebrate, as depicted in the over 1000 photographs submitted in the 2009 Snowden photography competition.

The final selection of photographs will be displayed by Snowden at exhibitions, conferences and events internationally during 2010.

Red Rock Film Festival of Zion Canyon 2010

Held beneath the red rocks of Zion National Park, the international 4th Annual Red Rock Film Festival comes back in November of 2010 with more excellent programming that will both challenge and educate the mind. The Xtreme sports docs and off-the-charts dramatic features are just the accessories to the festival’s staple of political documentaries and foreign film. The festival is just a 2 hour drive North of Las Vegas, and offers a breathtaking location to see film in the warm part of the state of Utah. The Red Rock Film Festival is among MovieMaker magazine's 2009 List of "25 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee."

The festival offers a no "back-door" policy for their film competition, meaning there are no "pre-selected" films in the contest - all films entered into the competition, fill out an entry form, pay an entry fee and go through the extensive review process which includes notes on the film if the filmmaker request them. Filmmakers who enter early also receive a second chance to enter their film with changes!

Student Writing Competition 2010 Sponsored ACTEC

Purpose : This competition was created by ACTEC’s Legal Education Committee, which consists of law school professors who teach in the area of trusts and estates and practitioners who teach as adjuncts in the trusts and estates field. The competition honors the late Mary Moers Wenig, a member of ACTEC’s Legal Education Committee, who was a law school professor for over 30 years.

Consistent with ACTEC’s purposes, the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel Mary Moers Wenig Student Writing Competition was created to encourage and reward scholarly works in the area of trusts and estates. ACTEC’s purposes are to maintain an association of lawyers, international in scope, skilled and experienced in the preparation of wills and trusts; estate planning; probate procedure and administration of trusts and estates of decedents, minors and incompetents; to improve and reform probate, trust and tax laws, procedures, and professional responsibility, to bring together qualified lawyers whose character and ability will contribute to the achievement of the purposes of the College; and to cooperate with bar associations and other organizations with similar purposes.

The "I Am an Entrepreneur" photography competition

About the Contest :
The SEVEN Fund is pleased to announce the ‘I Am an Entrepreneur’ photography competition. This competition recognizes the outstanding use of photography to tell compelling stories of role model entrepreneurs from around the world. Anyone is welcome to participate in this competition. The competition will award twelve (12) prizes, one per month, over a period of one year. Each month, one finalist will be selected and will receive a prize of $100. The grand prize winner (selected from among the 12 finalist photographs) will receive $1,000 at the end of the year.

Often, the imagery associated with developing nations captures the misery that accompanies poverty. While it is important that these things are taken seriously and are documented, we believe that developing nations also represent tremendous opportunities for hope. The “I am an Entrepreneur” competition strives to reframe the dialogue around solutions to poverty by infusing the world's imagination with new imagery that focuses on entrepreneurship. Our objective with this competition is to gather stunning photographs profiling individual entrepreneurs from around the globe.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE 2010 NEW YORK STATE BAR ASSOCIATION COMMITTEE ON ANIMALS AND THE LAW THIRD ANNUAL STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION

The Committee on Animals and the Law of the New York State Bar Association is very pleased to announce the Third Annual Student Writing Competition. The deadline for submission is June 15, 2010.

The Committee on Animals and the Law was established to provide information resources for the New York State Bar Association’s members and the public about non-human, animal related humane issues, which arise from and have an effect upon our legal system. This competition seeks to foster legal scholarship among law students in the area of animals and the law. This competition provides law students with an incentive and opportunity to learn more about this area of law.

Law students (which include J.D., L.L.M., Ph.D., and S.J.D. candidates) are invited to submit to the Committee on Animals and the Law an article concerning any area of Animal Law. All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of attorneys and other professionals practicing or otherwise involved in animal law. The winner will be chosen in accordance with the attached rules. The first place winner will receive $1,000 and a certificate of achievement. The second place winner will receive $500 and a certificate of achievement.

RULES

Topic : Any topic on Animal Law.

Eligibility : To be eligible for consideration, the submission must be written by a student currently enrolled (full time or part time) in an ABA-accredited law school. Students expecting to receive their degree in 2010 are eligible for consideration. The submission must be written by one and only one student, i.e., papers jointly written by more than one student or that have been subjected to line editing by professors or advisors shall not be considered. No paper that has been previously published in any form shall be considered.

Deadline : Papers must be postmarked no later than June 15, 2010.

Award Criteria: Written submissions will be judged based on quality, clarity, originality, and organization. All essays must also meet the following criteria:

Length: Type written, double spaced, no less than 12 point Times New Roman font, on 8 ½ inch by 11 inch paper, with 1 inch margins, and no more than 25 pages, including footnotes. Footnotes should be single spaced, and no less than 10 point font.

Format: One hard copy of the written submission and one electronic copy in Microsoft Word format on a disk or CD must be submitted by mail, postmarked no later than June 15, 2010, and addressed to :
