Lighting Rural Tanzania Competition 2010 (LRTC 2010)

Deadline : December 31, 2009

Prize : US$ 100,000

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL (RFP): LIGHTING RURAL TANZANIA COMPETITION 2010 (LRTC2010)

1. Introduction

Lighting Rural Tanzania Competition 2010 (LRTC2010) is a competitive grant program that will support private enterprises in developing and delivering a wide array of modern lighting products for rural households and businesses. Lighting Rural Tanzania will build upon the base of lighting technologies that exist today, seeking market solutions to provide an array of products with the quality, applications, costs, or configurations needed by the low income market segment. Energy for these lights could be from renewable energy, mechanical, or other non-fossil fuel sources. These small-scale projects not only deliver results, but also have the potential to be expanded or replicated elsewhere.

The competition will focus on increasing access to renewable energies; improve technologies and reduction of uses of weak lamps, kerosene lamps and candles. The objective of (LRTC2010) is to recognize and support innovative initiatives that increase access to sustainable, affordable, and energy services for people in rural Tanzania and have credible potential for replication and scaling-up. The Lighting Rural Tanzania will be held in collaboration with the World Bank.

2. Who Should Participate

Proposals are invited from a range of development innovators - civil society groups, social entrepreneurs, private foundations, government agencies, academia, the private sector, and individuals.

3. Program Objective

The overall Program Objective is the provision of clean, affordable, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy services to rural communities in Mainland Tanzania.

* The following are specific objectives of the competition:
* Increase access to modern lighting systems for households, schools and health centers.
* Improve technology for production of low cost renewable energy products.
* Bring to the market, products that are competitive in terms of price.
* Build sustainable technical and commercial capabilities of rural energy entrepreneurs to operate and sustainably manage renewable energy systems.
* Enhance project developers’ competencies in preparing viable and bankable project proposals.

4. Lighting Rural Tanzania Competition Themes

* Service Delivery: Sustainable and large scale delivery of lighting products and services in rural Tanzania, including removal of existing barriers.
* Product Innovation: Responding to consumer and market needs via development and commercialization of high quality, durable, efficient, low cost lighting products/services.
* Environment: Renewable energy, clean energy technologies, energy efficiency, and/or environmentally sustainable solutions to meet lighting needs of households, small enterprises, communities, etc.
* Health: Protecting health from environmental risk factors, such as indoor air pollution and improper disposal of hazardous material. Reliance on wood fuels combined with inadequate housing/cooking facilities lead to a high incidence of respiratory infection from indoor air pollution, and contributes to deforestation, soil erosion, and environmental degradation. Moreover, the lack of energy for basic human activity such as agriculture, transport, medical care, communication, education, and enterprise further marginalizes poor people and limits their ability to increase their incomes.
* Natural Resources: Sustainable management of natural resources (land, water, forests) specifically for the provision of water supply, sanitation and energy to off-grid rural communities.

The competition seeks to support innovative and sustainable local-level solutions that improve the quality of and access to modern energy services for off-grid communities in Mainland Tanzania. In doing so, the Rural Energy Agency and the community will gain valuable insights on providing effective and efficient service delivery to these people.

5. Eligibility Criteria

The competition is open to a wide variety of organizations, including Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), international partners, private foundations, universities and schools, private sector groups, individuals, and local and municipal governments. o Private businesses, individuals, non-profit organization such as NGOs/CSOs, foundations and universities/schools are eligible.
o Municipal and local government agencies are eligible to apply in partnership with at least one of the other different organizations mentioned above.
* Implementation time frame: Proposed activities must be completed within 18 months of receiving the initial disbursement from LRTC2010.
* Results: The output or results outlined in proposals should be measurable and demonstrate a direct impact on improving the access to services by poor and marginalized households in an environmentally sound manner. Projects with the sole output of research, such as publications or conferences/forums with no directly verifiable results on the ground, will be ineligible. YouTube Caroling Singing Contest $5,000

Who doesn’t love carolers? They show up at your door, sing a holiday favorite and leave, imparting you with Christmas cheer. If caroling is your thing, but you’re not brave enough to bear the winter weather and go door to door, YouTube has a rewarding incentive for you to take your tunes to the web and carol online instead.

YouTube Caroling, a new channel from the video site sponsored by Marshalls and T.J. Maxx, is essentially a caroling contest site where singers can pick one of four songs to sing in the hopes of winning a $100 gift card. If you want to win the $5,000 gift card grand prize, then try your hand at a rendition of “Deck Yourself Out” or “We Wish You a Better Way to Christmas Shop,” two original songs with obvious tie-ins to the channel sponsors.

Should you wish to participate, you can select your ditty, and opt to record your song on site via webcam karaoke-style or you can download the music and lyrics and upload your rendition after the fact. If you’d rather watch online carolers try their hand at caroling for cash, then you can do that too. In fact, it could prove to be quite an entertaining experience.

You probably won’t be seeing any MashableMashableMashable editors take the mic to try our hand at the carol contest. For those of you bolder than us, however, we’d love for you to share a link to your YouTubeYouTubeYouTube carol submission in the comments. Happy caroling and good luck.

Marshalls and T.J. Maxx will be awarding prizes to 16 carolers. The top 15 videos from any of the four carols will receive $100 gift cards from T.J. Maxx and Marshalls.

Additionally, the best video from the original Marshalls and T.J. Maxx carols ("We Wish You a Better Way To Christmas Shop" and "Deck Yourself Out") will win the grand prize: a $5000 gift card.

You can sing any of the four carols for a chance to win a $100 gift card.

The best rendition from either of the original carols, "Deck Yourself Out" and "We Wish You a Better Way To Christmas Shop", will win a $5,000 gift card from Marshalls and T.J. Maxx.

You may enter once per carol. Good luck!

Divine Poetry Competition 2009

Deadline : 21st Dec 2009

Top children’s author Anthony Horowitz to join Divine and Christian Aid to judge this year’s nationwide Divine Poetry Competition!

Divine, the chocolate company owned by cocoa farmers, is delighted to announce the eighth annual national Divine Poetry Competition in association with Christian Aid. This year the mouthwatering theme is “…if I owned a chocolate company...” and our guest judge is top author Anthony Horowitz. This hugely popular nationwide competition which attracts thousands of entries each year. is open to all ages. The deadline for entries is Monday 21st December and the winners of great Divine prizes will be announced at the end of January 2010. Winners will have the extra thrill of hearing their work read aloud by Anthony Horowitz.

How to enter

The Divine Poetry Competition has become a firm fixture in the calendar of hundreds of primary and secondary schools nationwide (and is equally popular with adults). It provides teachers with an opportunity to explore fair trade in class, and a theme that combines chocolate with the issues of fairer trading never fails to inspire wonderfully creative entries. Winners will receive fabulous Divine chocolate hampers and book vouchers. Previous judges include Anne Fine, Michael Morpurgo, Adrian Mitchell and Jacqueline Wilson – the winners will have their poems filmed being read out loud by Anthony Horowitz himself. Entry details have been sent out to 20,000 schools as well as bookshops, libraries and Fairtrade groups and be requested on email : poetry@divinechocolate.com.

Now in its eighth year, the theme for the 2009 Divine Poetry Competition is “if I owned a chocolate company” and asks entrants to get their creative (& chocolate) juices flowing in imagining what it would be like to own a chocolate company.

Divine and partner Christian Aid are asking aspiring poets to write a poem imagining how wonderful it would be to own their own chocolate company. They are asked to consider what sorts of delicious chocolate products they would make & sell as well as thinking about how they would ensure the cocoa farmers received a fair deal. Alternatively entrants can think about what it would be like for cocoa farmers to own their own chocolate company (like Divine) and what this would mean for the lives of their families & communities.

Divine and Christian Aid are delighted to announce that Anthony Horowitz, author of the cult children’s Alex Rider book series, will be leading the judging panel this year. Often sighted by the media as “the writer who gets boys reading”, Anthony Horowitz’s Alex Rider Series has sold millions of copies worldwide with the latest, Crocodile Teas, due out this autumn. Anthony won the prestigious British Book Award for Children’s Book of the Year in 2006 and was named Author of the Year at the British Book Industry Awards in 2007. He is delighted to be involved in the competition this year saying, “Poetry and chocolate go hand in hand, I would say, in that they both greatly enhance the overall quality of life. And fair trade should be uppermost in our minds. I am delighted to be involved in this competition and wish all the entrants every success”.

Last years’ judge Anne Fine said, “Learning always works best when you get the chance to voice your own ideas, and this competition is a most creative way to make that happen. It is wonderful to see how all these young people have really grasped the concept of Fairtrade and expressed it in their own words. The poems that really shone were those that stemmed from a truly individual perspective rather than from well-trodden notions. There were some lovely, carefully crafted poems”.

Divine Chocolate and Christian Aid have regularly worked in partnership ever since the charity supported the launch of Divine in 1998. Both share the aim to alleviate poverty in the developing world. Divine’s mission is to ensure a more equitable trading relationship with cocoa farmers in West Africa. Divine is the choice for chocolate lovers who are looking for high quality products and ethical credentials they can really trust. Here in the UK we spend £3.6 billion worth of chocolate a year but chocolate is worth much more than raw cocoa beans; and cocoa farmers across the world rarely see any of the money made by selling chocolate bars. Divine Chocolate is different because as well as paying the Fairtrade price for its cocoa, Divine is actually owned by the farmers themselves. This means they share in Divine’s profits and are instrumental in the running of their chocolate brand.

Sara Jayne-Stanes, chocolate expert and founder member of the Academy of Chocolate says of Divine’s 70% bar, “a mouthful of intense, very smooth, delectable chocolate … Divine is in a league of its own”.

• Divine Chocolate has won a number of prestigious awards. These include Good Housekeeping’s Favourite Fairtrade Product 2008 and Best Food Brand in the SHE magazine Ethical Awards 2007. Divine Chocolate Ltd was awarded Best Social Enterprise 2007 at the Enterprising Solutions awards run by the Office of the Third Sector and The Observer Best Ethical Business 2008.

• The UK chocolate market alone is worth approximately £3.6 billion a year: if Fairtrade products can capture even a small proportion of that market, producers in developing countries gain real benefits.

First Shutter Photo Ribbon Photo Competition

Deadline : December 29th, 2009

We here at Shutter Photo are very excited to announce our very first photo competition for the members (and soon to be members) of the Shutter Photo @ Flickr Group. As regular readers of Shutter Photo already are aware, at the top of our page is a cropped photo we refer to as the ‘ribbon’. To date, this photo is the product of one of our own. But that will no longer be the case. The ribbon shown on the main page could very well be yours, if you are, perhaps, the winner of this competition.

The Ribbon Photo Competition is going to be a fairly regular competition which we will offer four times per year, once every three months. The winner gets their photo displayed as the ribbon for a period of three months, and their full credit (complete with links) will be provided in a prominent place on our main page. This is a great way to get your work exhibited and displayed. It’s also going to be a fun competition.

Entering is simple, and certainly worth a try. For more detailed information about the competition, please see below. If you have questions, comments and/or thoughts, please feel free to discuss in response to this post. As this is our first competition, we’re looking for any thoughts and feedback to help us make sure that this, and future, competitions run smoothly.

I hope to see your photos submitted – we’re really looking forward to this, and to the possibility of a new ribbon here at Shutter Photo.

Photo Requirements

The ribbon shown at the top of the page is 965×70 at 72 DPI. Any photo entered into this competition shall be at least that size and shall have the same aspect ratio. Our current photo is nearly monotone, but don’t let that influence your contribution. We will accept all types of photos, including color photos (even hand-colored photos). Subject matter is up to you, as is the cropping.

How to Enter

To enter, you must be a member of the Shutter Photo @ Flickr Group (which we call SP@Flickr for short). Your photo must be submitted to the SP@Flickr Pool and must be tagged “SPRIBBONCONTEST1″ (copy/paste without quotes just to be sure). As mentioned above, the official photo must be 965×70 at 72 DPI (or larger with the same aspect ratio). Feel free to submit a full-size uncropped photo for support, but let it be known that the official image used for judging will be the one at 965×70 size.

The submission deadline will be December 29th, 2009 at midnight, GMT.

The Prize

The winning photograph will be displayed as the “ribbon” across the top of the main page here at Shutter Photo. Additionally, full credit will be provided in a prominent location (contained within the “Welcome” block at the top-right of the home page) including the name of the photographer, the name of the photo, a link to an uncropped version of the photograph (if available) and up to two links to the creator/owner’s website(s) of choice (personal blog, personal gallery, etc). Shutter Photo guarantees that the ribbon, credits and associated links will remain in place for a minimum of three months (based on calendar months). Winning photos, and associated credits and links, will be maintained in an all-star gallery, which is intended to be maintained indefinately.

The Judges

This will be a judged event. I will certainly be the first judge, but I won’t go it alone. Helping me with judging will be Lisa Newton and David Clark, both great photographers in their own right. Here’s a little more information about each of us :

Lisa Newton is best known for her work with her blog, Travelin’ Local. Her site is all about the local travel opportunities one will find in Southern California, though I one day expect some franchises all over the country, or even the world. Her photography, which can be characterized as travel photography or even photojournalism is of course complimentary to her site. Photography takes a bit of a side-stage to her main works, her writings of her journeys around Southern California, but it is an essential part of her blog. In addition to her work on her own blog, Lisa is a contributing guest writer to Digital Photography School. Lisa’s works are avaiable on her blog, Travelin’ Local and at Flickr.

David Clark is an experienced nature and industrial photographer. His photography has been featured here at Shutter Photo. A mathematician by trade, Clark is skilled at making minute calculations in the field with his camera. He also has an apparent steel arm, shooting often with lower shutter speeds than most photographers would be comfortable without a tripod – yet his work is tack sharp. His work is inspiring; not only for its ability to bring beauty out of presumably ugly subjects (industrial ruins, burned out buildings, and so on) but also because of his ability to provide interesting perspectives on wildlife nature. Who else would provide to us a poster-worthy photo of a Squirrel eating a French Fry? David’s work can be found at his blog, Cliffs and Ruins, his portfolio site, David Clark Photography, and of course Flickr.

D. Travis North – well…that’s me. If you’re here, I assume you know quite a bit about me already. But for those of you who aren’t familiar, here’s a short introduction. I am a Professional Landscape Architect with a strong interest in photography for the past fifteen years. I like to shoot just about anything, but I tend to be most attracted to landscape photography, architectural photography and any details of either. My work has been featured in Soura Magazine, as a guest photographer at The Carey Adventures and on Digital Photography School. I of course edit and maintain Shutter Photo, but my works are also available at my portfolio site, D. Travis North Photography, my photo blog No Words and, of course, Flickr.

The Essential Disclaimer By entering this contest, you agree only to permit the use of your photo by Shutter Photo or its affiliates for the purpose of promoting the site, Shutter Photo, or for sharing in a designated gallery for the purpose of sharing entries into said competition. Shutter Photo, and it’s affiliates, agree to fully credit the creator/owner of the photograph in every instance of the photograph’s display. The full ownership and copyright shall be of the creator/owner of the photograph(s) in question and Shutter Photo will not claim ownership and/or copyright of any photo entered in this competition. Shutter Photo, or its affiliates, reserves the right to alter the winning photo in any means necessary to display as part of the website. All edits, if any, will be noted within the designated crediting block.

The winning photographer/owner’s website selection is subject to review of Shutter Photo staff. Any links to websites considered inappropriate for our audience, websites that are clearly designed for spam or malware purposes or otherwise will be rejected. Shutter Photo reserves the right to reject any link or to remove a link without warning.

Year of the Air Force Family T-shirt Design Competition Under Way

Year of the Air Force Family T-shirt Design Competition Under Way
Deadline : Dec. 20,2009

The Air Force Services Agency is promoting a T-shirt design competition on the recently launched myairforcelife.com, now through Dec. 20,2009 as part of the Year of the Air Force Family.

"The site will feature programs and competitions that will roll out through the year. We are focusing on the 'play' part of 'The Air Force is a great place to live, work, and play' campaign," said Ms. Debbie Karnes, Air Force Services Agency spokeswoman. "There's something for everyone: YoAFF T-shirt design, short story, video short, original song, and photography competition. The site will also offer a place for visitors to provide quips and quotes on how the Air Force has enriched their lives."

One winner in each category (youth and adult) will be selected to win an Apple Mac Book laptop and Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium software valued at about $2,000. The winner in the adult category may also have the opportunity to have their entry design featured on a T-shirt that will be sold in AAFES stores.

Earlier this year, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz and Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley designated July 2009 to July 2010 as the Year of the Air Force Family, a year-long focus on Air Force programs highlighting the importance of, and commitment to, the entire Air Force family: all Airmen, married and single; spouses; children; Air Force civilians; extended families; and retirees.

"Taking care of families is a solemn promise we make to each Airman and family member," said Secretary Donley. "Sense of community is a cultural trademark of the Air Force, and we will seek ways to nurture it as part of the larger 'Year of the Air Force Family' effort."

This is an opportunity for Airmen to express through their T-shirt design, what living the Air Force life means to them, their family, and their friends.

To find details on the contest and to enter, Airmen and eligible patrons of Air Force MWR programs can log on to www.myairforcelife.com.

PPP Launch Logo Design Competition In Re-Branding Exercise

Deadline : December 7, 2009

SHAH ALAM, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- The People's Progressive Party (PPP) will launch a nationwide logo design competition next month as part of its re-branding exercise to rejuvenate and promote a prominent identity for the party.

Party president, Datuk M. Kayveas, said the aim of the contest, which will be opened to all Malaysians, was to make PPP, a component party of Barisan Nasional, to be attractive and acceptable to the Malaysian community, especially youngsters.

"The logo design competition was the first of its kind being implemented in a political party in the country, including PPP. The details of the contest, rules and regulations, will be posted at PPP's website at www.ppp.org.my by Dec 7. Party information chief A. Chandrakumanan will announce the opening and closing dates for the competition," he told Bernama.

The first prize for the competition is RM5,000, second prize (RM3,000), third prize (RM1,000) and consolation prizes worth RM500 each would be given to three contestants.

Kayveas said contestants are only required to use colours which are stated in the Malaysian flag, excluding yellow, in the design pieces.

"We want contestants to avoid using yellow in the design since it is a royal colour," he said, adding the last time PPP changed its logo was in 1996.

Kayveas also said that the current logo has too many colours, costing the party a substantial amount for printing costs.

Meanwhile, the former deputy minister in the prime minister's department said the party was ready to go online to recruit members and to form party branches by next January.

Kayveas added that the party plans to increase its membership to about 700,000 through online recruitment, before the next general election.

The PPP now has about 547,000 members.

He also said that PPP will form a 12-member panel, state assembly committee, in each of its 155 divisions nationwide.
