Deadline : January 16, 2010
YOUNGSTERS with dreams of becoming the next JK Rowling can start by entering this year’s Malvern Young Writer of the Year Competition.
Winners in this year’s competition will have the thrill of seeing their stories in print as well as win cash prizes.
There is still time to enter the competition, which is being run by the Malvern Writers Circle, as the closing date is not until January 16, 2010. The writing competition is aimed at budding authors aged 13-19 with categories for short stories, poetry and plays for different age groups.
“We’ve got some good prize money this year thanks to our sponsors and we plan to publish the winning entries in a Young Writers Anthology,” explained Pat Tromans, secretary of Malvern Writers Circle.
There will be three judges with Graham Gardner, author of Inventing Elliot, judging the short story/creative prose category, Dr David Arnold, of the University of Worcester, judging poetry, and Peter Sutton, author of Elgar and Alice, judging the plays.
Youngsters can submit one piece on any subject in one of the following categories - short story/prose up to 2,000 words age range 16-19 and 13-15; poetry, up to 40 lines, ages 16-19 and 13-15; scene or extract from a play up to 2,000 words, age 13-19.
The first prize in each category is £50, second prize £25 and there will be £10 for each commended entry. One winner in both age ranges will also receive an additional prize of £50 and the title Malvern Young Writer of the Year. The winners will be invited to read their entries at an award ceremony next summer and young writers who enter will receive feedback and comments from the judging panel.
Local schools already have information about the competition and entry forms but anyone can download a form and full details from the Malvern Writers Circle website at malvernwriterscircle.org.uk. The form and piece of writing must be returned by January 16 to MWC Young Writers’ Competition, 15 Queens Drive, Great Malvern, Worcs WR14 4RE.
