Joyce Kilmer Poetry Contest (Deadline May 2011)

Joyce Kilmer Poetry Contest - sponsored by Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center

This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the dedication of the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, a living memorial to writer/poet Joyce Kilmer, best known for the poem, “Trees.” Kilmer was killed in action during World War I while serving in France on July 30, 1918. The Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center is sponsoring a Poetry Contest to honor this anniversary.

History of Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

In 1934, the Bozeman Bulger Post of the VFW petitioned the U.S. government to find a suitable area to serve as a monument to Kilmer. An isolated pocket of old-growth hardwood forest within the Nantahala National Forest’s Cheoah Ranger District in western North Carolina was selected. On July 30, 1936, ceremonies were conducted to honor Kilmer and dedicate the Memorial Forest to his memory. The 3,800-acre Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest with trees dating back 450 years is now a part of the 14,000 acre Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness.

The forest is located in Graham County, North Carolina just outside of Robbinsville, which is in the far western corner of the state. In this most beautiful, natural setting that was the unchartered hunting ground of the Cherokee Indians, trees grow more than 100 feet tall and some 20 feet around the base. In addition to these trees, there is an outstanding variety of shrubs, vines, ferns, mosses, lichen, liverworts, and herbaceous plants. In spring, wildflowers take advantage of the sunlight which will not be available after the hardwood trees are covered with shade-producing leaves. The Memorial Forest, comprised of giant poplars and large red oaks, as well as many other varieties of trees, is maintained in its primitive and natural state by the US Forest Service.

75th Anniversary Celebration Information

The Partners of the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the natural and heritage resources of the wilderness, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service are planning the 75th Anniversary celebration. A rededication ceremony will be held at Rattler Ford campground, outside of Robbinsville, North Carolina, on July 30, 2011. This celebration will include a 5K road race through a portion of the Nantahala National Forest, exhibits highlighting the area’s rich natural and cultural heritage, guided tours of the Joyce Kilmer National Recreation Trail and speakers highlighting both Joyce Kilmer’s life and the U.S. Forest Service’s stewardship of wilderness. Exeter Writing Contest For Students (Deadline March 2011)

The Exeter Historical Society would like to invite students in grades 6 through 12 to compete for the Nancy Carnegie Merrill History Award by writing a research paper in honor of our esteemed former curator for her invaluable contributions to the preservation and interpretation of our local history.

Students at the Cooperative Middle School and Exeter High School are invited to enter by contacting faculty members in their social studies departments.

Students who do not attend one of the above-mentioned schools may enter by contacting the Exeter Historical Society for further information. Topics should focus on an aspect of our communal past related to the theme “Exeter at the Time of the Civil War.” Students should not attempt to write the research paper without receiving the judges’ criteria and requirements from their school’s faculty members or the staff of the Exeter Historical Society.

A panel of judges will choose one entry from each school division that best meets the criteria of outstanding achievement in format, historical accuracy, originality, and style.

Winning papers will be read by the authors at an awards ceremony on April 21, 2011.

A $100 prize will also be awarded to each winner.

Seacoast Credit Union of Hampton and Exeter is generously sponsoring the award for the fifth consecutive year.

The staff of the Exeter Historical Society welcomes interested students to visit and explore our collection for ideas and inspiration.

It is our hope that the Nancy Carnegie Merrill Award will foster an appreciation for our community and an interest in its past.

The award is named for Nancy Carnegie Merrill, esteemed citizen and Exeter town historian.

Mrs. Merrill, a graduate of The College of William & Mary in Virginia and Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, moved to Exeter, NH, from her native Ohio in 1949 to be the school nurse for SAU16.

Her nursing career ceased in 1952 when she married David D. Merrill.

After her husband’s death in 1975, she earned her Master of Library Science degree from the University of Rhode Island and served as the reference librarian at the Exeter Public Library.

Mrs. Merrill’s interest in local history, backed by her skill and patience as a researcher, has benefited readers of her many newspaper articles and of her important 1988 town history, Exeter, New Hampshire 1888-1988.

During her career as a local historian, Mrs. Merrill was the director of collections at the Exeter Historical Society for 25 years, as well as serving on the New Hampshire American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, as a trustee of the New Hampshire Historical Society and historian of The Congregational Church.

Mrs. Merrill retired from the society in 2000.

The submission deadline for research papers is Tuesday, March 22, 2011.
