Canning House – a unique centre dedicated to stimulating understanding and engagement between Britain and the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian world, through dynamic debates, events and educational activities – is pleased to announce the 2010 Essay Competition for students of Spanish and Portuguese.
The competition is open to students aged 17-19, both those who are learning Spanish or Portuguese as a foreign language and those from diaspora communities in the UK. Entrants are required to write an essay of 750 – 1,000 words, in Spanish or Portuguese, on the following subject: “The Environment, Climate Change in Latin America and/or Iberia”. The closing date for entries is 8 January 2010.
Three prizes will be offered for essays for both Spanish and Portuguese language categories:
Prizes for Spanish category:
1st Prize: A return ticket to a Latin American country of the winner’s choice (donated by Iberia) and a cheque for £200
2nd Prize: A cheque for £150
3rd Prize: A cheque for £100
Prizes for Portuguese category
1st Prize: A return ticket to Brazil (donated by TAM) and a cheque for £200
2nd Prize: A cheque for £150
3rd Prize: A cheque for £100
NEW GAP YEAR CATEGORY FOR 2010!
This year we have a new category where entrants will have the opportunity to win a gap year in Latin America worth up to £2000, courtesy of Lattitude Global Volunteering.
Students who want to be considered for this prize should write an essay in Spanish or Portuguese on the following topic: “I want to spend a gap year in Brazil/Ecuador/Mexico/Argentina (delete as appropriate) because………” Entrants must be 18 at the time of travel.
