Yes, believe it or not, here you actually have a chance to get paid for your TOEFL writing preparation!
Jason's TOEFL iBT Writing Challenge involves responding to a special TOEFL Independent Essay topic (see below). It is open to anyone preparing for or just interested in the writing section of the TOEFL test.
There is prize money up for grabs for the best essay entries. You can use it to help you pay that expensive TOEFL iBT test fee, buy some new test prep books, take your friends out for dinner (as a way of apologizing for your grumpiness and stressed-out demeanor as a result of preparing for the test!), or whatever else takes your fancy.
1. Competition Dates:
August 15 ~ September 26, 2008 (final submission date)
2. Prizes:
1st Place Winner - US$100!
2nd Place Winner - US$50
3rd Place Winner - US$25
3. Evaluation Details:
Jason Renshaw, international Pearson Longman author and founder of the Global English Discussion Forum, will grade each essay. To allow for greater differentiation between individual essays, a scoring scale of 0-100 will be used (instead of the simplified 0-5 scale in the TOEFL).
Please note that scores will be allocated following the conclusion of the competition (Friday, September 26), and at that time each score will be placed under the individual essay it applies to.

- The standard 30 minute time limit for this task cannot be realistically enforced through this online format, so no time limits are applied for composing your essay :-)
- Essays not to exceed 450 words in total length
- No plagiarizing (copying) other people's essay content
- One essay submission only per individual entrant
- You may edit, delete, or re-submit (but not double-post) your essay as many times as you like prior to the competition finishing date on September 26
- In order to receive prize money, entrants must have their own Paypal account (see here for more details)
- Any non-essay submissions in this thread will be automatically deleted (if you have questions or comments, please post them in the General Discussion Topics Forum)
- Only responses to the specific competition topic (see below) will be accepted in this thread
